Advanced Process Control (12-13)

by Dr Paul Turner MIET CEng director, APC practice leadership, AspenTech

Advanced process control (APC) has matured from a differentiating technology enjoyed by the largest refining and bulk chemical entities to a must-have technology for all continuous process companies. Driven by industry consolidation, market volatility, the reduced availability of skilled human resources and the need to broaden applicability to smaller and less complex processing units, technology vendors are focusing on eliminating the complexity, broadening the footprint and standardising the delivery and support of APC solutions.

Integrating Video Monitoring into SCADA Process Management Systems (14)

By Clarke Esler of Industrial Video and Control

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are generally software designed to monitor and control complex process systems. They can provide automated control in situations where human control could be too slow or dangerous. SCADA systems also provide a graphical human-machine interface (HMI). Despite the sophisticated nature of these GUIs, the system does not provide eyes on site. Camera systems like those from Industrial Video & Control (IVC) are designed to not only provide industrial grade cameras, but also sophisticated camera management software. Software like IVC’s Relay Server software provides an API specifically designed to integrate video in SCADA applications thereby giving the system’s operators the “eyes” they need to be most effective.

Drives - The Importance of Whole Life Costs (16)

Purchase cost remains the key driving factor in the buying process for many people, whether purchasing the latest gadget, car or even manufacturing equipment. Yet in order to reap the greatest benefits and unlock the real value from equipment, plant managers should be embracing the concept of whole life costs, says Mark Chrimes – Product Manager – Standard Drives – Siemens Automation & Drives.

Signal Isolators, Converters & Interfaces (Part 1) (18-19)

By: Jay DeCastro - Senior Project Design Engineer – Moore Industries

By using the right signal interface instruments, in the right ways, potential problems can be easily avoided well before they boil over...quite literally in some cases.

Calibration Management (33)

Effective calibration regimes optimise costs, improve product quality, increase process reliability and provide auditable and traceable processes. Peter Barlow, Service Manager at Endress+Hauser Ltd, discusses the increasing demands on calibration management and identifies the factors that make a calibration regime successful.

Choosing the Right Industrial Mixer (34-35)

Mixing is one of the most crucial processes in a wide range of manufacturing industries, ranging from food to pharmaceuticals; from cosmetics to chemicals. As mixtures become more complex, production runs become shorter resulting tighter manufacturing constraints. To meet these demands, mixers are having to become more adaptable, efficient and mechanically simple to deliver the product accuracy and costs required by any moderm production plant. Chris Boone, Managing Director, J.R. Boone Ltd reviews the latest mixing technologies.

Infrared Thermography in Process Applications (38)

By Austin Dunne – European Training Manager, Institute of Infrared Thermography

As awareness of infrared thermography has increase over the last five years, many companies have made a decision to include it into their maintenance programme as a defence against catastrophic failure of industrial assets. Historically Infrared Thermography has been regarded as a cost effective tool, used to inspect electrical
equipment, as most electrical faults will be displayed as a rise in temperature. If companies invest in this technology, then it is a small leap forward to use infrared thermography on mechanical assets to produce a signature reading of all machines located at a facility. In conjunction with other techniques for example, oil analysis and vibration analysis, it can be become a powerful tool, which should be considered by industry as a worthwhile investment.

Flow Meter Stability (40)

Signalling enhancements herald a new era in flow meter stability

By: Dr. Ray Keech – Head of Flow D & D – ABB Ltd

Advanced signal processing may not be an obvious feature to look for when choosing a flow meter. However, while features such as more robust packaging and improved usability are an ‘easy sell’, signal processing can enable users to tap into a wealth of previously inaccessible additional information that can be derived or inferred from the measured data. Get it right and users can gain valuable insights into the status and condition of their products and processes.
