Hindered settling slurries can present a challenge to the design of agitators because the nature of the slurry including the particle size distribution, percent solids and viscosity needs to be fully understood. The required impeller design and agitator power level is not only based upon the settling characteristics of the slurry, but also based on the viscosity level as most slurries above 50%wt typically exhibit non-Newtonian viscosity behaviour. If the application is viscosity controlled the impeller style and number of impellers chosen for a given application becomes important.
The new Eclipse Magnetics Power Matrix Rail magnetic clamping system is already proving to be an excellent investment at UK switches, crossings and systems manufacturer, Corus Cogifer. The system provides touch button-permanent-magnet clamping for the machining of rails. Compared to the company’s previous hydraulic clamping system, the Power Matrix Rail has reduced setup and production times significantly and Corus Cogifer are anticipating a very quick return on its investment.
Integrated process automation based on System 800xA, safety and power for silicon production line to maximise capacity while increasing energy efficiency
ABB delivered a compressive automation and power solution for Elkem Solar’s production line at its facility in Kristiansand, Norway. The facility produces highly processed silicon for the global solar cell industry. ABB’s scope of supply includes comprehensive electrical and automation systems integrated on the common System 800xA platform.
When Cresilas, one of the leaders in fabricating models and prototypes using rapid prototyping, was looking for an epoxy resin to secure the component parts of a new design of headset using stereolithography technology, it chose RenShape® SL 7811.

Casella Keeping a billion passengers a year safe
London Underground (LU), part of Transport for London (TfL), the organisation that runs London’s vast transport system, carries more than one billion passengers a year – as many as the entire UK National Rail network. From its beginnings 140 years ago, LU now consists of 11 lines, on which three and a half million journeys are made each day, through its network of 270 stations.
Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service (CFRS) provides emergency services to the 700,000 inhabitants of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Based in Huntingdon, the Service operates from 28 fire stations, and has three main objectives – preventing fires, protecting visitors and staff in non-domestic premises and responding to fires, road traffic accidents and other emergencies as quickly as possible.
Digital plant architecture helps pharmaceutical plant do more for less, contributing to 4% improvement in Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
Cambrex Profarmaco of Milan, Italy, has successfully implemented Emerson Process Management's PlantWeb™digital plant architecture at its Paullo plant. The resulting gains in product quality and production efficiency have contributed to a 4 per cent increase in Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
When an animal feed delivery company was looking to optimise operational efficiency, it turned to Siemens Industry Automation and Drive Technologies to provide an ideal solution.
With customers spread over a large geographical area, the company which is responsible for delivering essential animal feed to 250 cattle farms found that it struggled to provide an efficient structure to its delivery schedule, and was therefore unable to operate in the most efficient manner. Although customers would try to monitor their own usage, they would often run out and need a delivery of animal feed urgently. As there was usually no prior warning to the need for a delivery, the company found that they would end up servicing to customers that were situated in the same town or even on the same road on two separate days within the same week, causing unnecessary costs and logistics issues.
