Bradford-based Thorite has grown over its 164 year history to become the UK”s biggest independent distributor of pneumatic products and process systems. So far, so boring you may think – when you”ve seen one compressor you”ve seen them all, and there”s nothing very exciting about compressed air, although it”s quite useful for inflating car tyres. And yet recently re-branded Thorite”s products and expertise are behind some of the most different, advanced and fascinating industrial applications you can imagine, from providing the spectacular force behind explosions on T.V. Soap Operas to putting a disabled aerobatics pilot in a spin to perfect his performance.
A few other examples include providing pneumatic products and advice to a London-based architect who has created a wall structure which moves in response to passers-by, literally making waves at the Science Museum in an interactive display, enabling Mallard, holder of the rail World Steam Speed Record since 1938, to blow its whistle with pride or assist budding Formula 1 design engineers build pneumatically operated, sequential gearbox controls for tomorrow”s motor racing world champions.
Basically, anything that moves, on or under the sea, in the air, on roads or on rail tracks can benefit from Thorite and its team of engineering specialists. Of course the company”s core business still provides automation and control products and systems, to save energy and costs for industrial processing in the food and drink, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and engineering industries. However, Thorite is fortunate to employ people who are passionate about everything to do with fluid power – and the more different the application, the better.
So “polishing” C02 bubbles to ensure bottled water purity, helping primary school children build and launch rockets, control a submerging helicopter rig which trains offshore workers in emergency ditchings, help re-engineer Donald Campbell”s Bluebird water speed record contender, or bring life to tap dancing robots are ideal subjects for Thorite”s boffins to ponder and perfect.
Thorite”s recent complete corporate rebranding exercise incorporates a strap-line simply saying “we”re different”. Once the scope of the company”s expertise is considered perhaps it should be accompanied by “we”re modest” too!
