The growing scarcity of freshwater due to rising water demands and a changing climate presents a major risk to manufacturing businesses.

The World Bank predicts that global GDP growth rates will fall 6% by the middle of the century as a result of increased competition for water. And this would result in costs of $2.5 billion for companies at the mercy of increased water scarcity. Water issues are becoming highly material factors affecting the growth and profitability of companies.

The main challenges faced by the industry with respect to water are those of securing adequate supply for what is a water-intensive process and ensuring that contamination of water sources is addressed where it occurs.

To circumvent any water related problems, companies are implementing water conservation strategies, examining water reclaim and reuse opportunities, re-engineering their water-using processes, and investigating alternative water sources.
