Guy's 'What's Coming Up'

A bi-monthly(ish) lighthearted insight into the world of PII's publisher Guy Ullmann's latest going's on, together with updates about PII and details of ‘What's coming up‘ in each issue

Hi and welcome to my May 2024 WCU!

It feels like a long time since I last wrote a WCU, and WOW has a lot happened since January, I could write a series!

WCU Janaury 2024

So trying to recap as briefly as possible…

So first things first, as I’m sure you know by now I’m a rather big Pompey fan and in case you didn’t know we won League One a few weeks ago, which I duly celebrated! It ends 11 years of pain out of the Championship and I can’t wait to be back and boy do I hope the Scummers don’t get promoted this season!

On April 17 I was proud to sponsor and present the Innovation award and the SHAPA awards evening, it was a fantastic evening and great to meet some of the SHAPA crew.

I wasn't too keen on the comedian who throughout his set joked about his father's Dementia, which touched a slight nerve, but I also appreciate people have different ways to deal with these things.

And even me Ma said I didn’t scrub up too bad either, which is a refreshing compliment from her!

Easter 2024

A distant memory now, but good memories as I met my friend Silvia in North Italy where we spent 5 days traveling around from Verona to Lake Garda, then on to Venice and finally to MonteGrotto, close to Padova where Silvia lived in a beautiful house she built from scratch, it was simply incredible…

Entrepreneur meet-up group

Last year, myself and 3 friends started a group, where once a month we’d meet to chat about all things entrepreneury! Our very first meeting was just the 4 of us, however a few months on it has blossomed into a very active community with over 100 members and monthly meet-ups in different locations to help support local venues and various other organised activities amongst the members.

Each event has a feature called ‘FireSide Chat’ where guest speakers chat with a host about their backgrounds both personally and in business all the way through to what they do currently, it's a great way for members to get to know each other.

I hosted our most recent meeting, which, despite having a big fear of talking in public, I really enjoyed to the point where I’m wondering how I could introduce this with PII talking to you guys – but I’m trying to see where we can add value to the listener – I’m all ears with any ideas you have and it would need to have a very different angle to our existing PII Podcast.

We're now in the process of creating a website for the group and introducing a few more segments to the meetings, it's really great to be around such positive people 🙂

The last trek 🙁

Francesca and I had a beautiful weekend away trekking, which subsequently turned out to be our last time together. She is also going through some difficult times with her father and for now is focussed on spending her time with him. I’m not sure if it will be continued but we shared some wonderful memories, so I am staying positive 🙂

On route we met some furry friends, saw some beautiful wall memorials, ate delicious food and discovered some incredible scenery.

Festivals galore...!

Mamoiada festival

WCU Janaury 2024

There are a number of important festivals throughout the year here and in March my good friend Tom & I visited a small town called Mamoiada where once a year it comes to life with traditional costumes, food & dancing. It really is a joy to see the parade of costumes and a lovely way to bring local communities together.

There are two main types of masks:

The Mamuthones, are dressed in sheep skins and wear a black wooden mask with a suffering or impassive expression. On their backs they carry ‘sa carriga', several cowbells tied with leather straps, while around their necks they have smaller bells.

The Issohadores wear a linen shirt, a red jacket and white trousers, carry a women's shawl over their shoulder and have brass and bronze rattles. Some of them also have a white anthropomorphic mask.

The Mamuthones, arranged in two parallel rows and flanked by the Issohadores, move very slowly curving under the weight of the cowbells. All that is heard is the rhythmic beat of the cowbells, which shakes them and makes them all ring.

The Issohadores, on the other hand, move, because they are lighter, with quicker, more agile steps. Suddenly they throw their rope, ‘sa soha', to catch someone in the audience present. To free themselves, the prisoners have to offer them wine to drink.

Citrus Fruit Festival

Next up was the orange festival in a very small town called Muravera, created to make visitors aware of the importance of citrus cultivation in the territory. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, however as we approached and saw cars already parking off the motorway junction, it quickly dawned on me that this wasn’t your average festival! It was HUGE!

We arrived in time to see the end of the morning parade which included floats demonstrating the various traditions in the region, followed by a parade of horses and traditional costumes.

And recently there has been the largest festival where the entire city is closed off for a majestic procession that covers 80 kilometres and is one of the longest and most ancient in the world. There are approx 2,500 people in traditional dress, coming from all over the region, followed by 270 horsemen, it’s a really amazing experience. My friend (pictured) was in the procession dressed in a wonderful costume.

Bits & Bobs

Summer is coming! I absolutely love it when the clocks come forward and we gain an extra hour of daylight, it makes such a difference to the evenings, especially with my birthday coming up at the end of May!

From birthday parties in the woods, beautiful beach days, sunset parties, board game parties to continued therapy on my poor knee – I’m still having daily physio with what I can only describe as mild electrocution therapy from a device that looks like it should be from a 60’s horror film!

A couple of short videos trying to capture a few highlights
WARNING there is a slight sexual reference
in the ‘Bits n Bobs video', do not watch if you are easily offended!

The dare was to suck Tom's fingers for 15 seconds, little did she know that he dabbed them in chilli powder first! And the less said about what Shristi was doing, the better!

It's the detail that counts!

A good Dutch friend of mine, Ivo, has recently been in hospital for almost 3 weeks, with a life changing illness. Thankfully he has been discharged and on route to a slow recovery.

Whilst he was there, I went to visit him one evening and he told me how his brother came to visit him and thought it would be nice to bring a copy of The Economist with him, however he didn't read what the cover story was about, which included a very helpful guide inside the magazine…..

Ivo saw the funny side….!
