Bredel CIP pump enhances hygienic processing efficiency

Listen to this article

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions has launched the Bredel CIP pump, designed to support hygienic and sanitary processes that demand high efficiency and regular clean-in-place operations.

Part of the Bredel hose pump range, the new CIP pump has been engineered to address common challenges in industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, where cleaning downtime and contamination risks can significantly impact productivity and costs.

In these sectors, extended cleaning cycles and the risk of batch contamination often lead to increased operational expenses. A pump that enables effective CIP without the need for bypass systems or disassembly helps to minimise production downtime while reducing the risk of product loss.

Designed for optimal CIP performance

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions has developed the Bredel CIP pump with a newly engineered rotor that enables operators to achieve CIP cleaning velocity requirements greater than 2 metres per second.

A key innovation is the inclusion of automatic retractable shoes, specifically designed for CIP processes. These allow the pump element and downstream system to be cleaned at the correct fluid velocity without damaging internal components.

By retracting the shoes during cleaning cycles, hose compression at elevated temperatures is eliminated. This not only protects the integrity of the hose but also extends its operational life and reduces the cost and frequency of replacement.

The Bredel CIP pump is available in three sizes to suit different process requirements: size 20 with a flow rate of 600 litres per hour, size 25 at 1,800 litres per hour and size 32 delivering up to 3,200 litres per hour.

Easy upgrade and reduced downtime

Existing Bredel users can upgrade to the CIP rotor variant quickly and efficiently. The upgrade can be carried out in situ with clear instructions, removing the need to take the pump out of the process line and avoiding unnecessary downtime.

This flexibility makes it easier for operators to modernise existing systems and benefit from improved cleaning performance without significant disruption to production.

Energy savings and reduced environmental impact

Energy efficiency is a key advantage of the Bredel CIP pump. Bredel estimates that users can achieve notable reductions in energy consumption, leading to lower carbon emissions and a smaller environmental footprint.

For example, in a brewery operating continuously with four one-hour cleaning cycles per day, the CIP pump can be reversed to retract the shoes and then switched off during the cleaning process. This removes the need to run the pump during CIP cycles, saving four hours of operation per day.

Over the course of a year, this equates to approximately 1,460 hours of reduced pump operation, delivering an energy saving of around 16 percent.

Key benefits of the Bredel CIP pump

The Bredel CIP pump delivers a range of operational and performance benefits for hygienic processing environments:

  • Reduces maintenance downtime
  • Lowers power consumption by eliminating the need to run the pump during CIP cycles
  • Supports compliance with food safety standards including FDA, EC1935 and 3A
  • Extends hose life by avoiding compression during high temperature cleaning cycles
  • Hygienic design where the only fluid contact is with the inside of the hose
  • High accuracy dosing with flow independent of suction or discharge conditions

Built for demanding hygienic applications

Grace Madden, Bredel Product Manager, said:The Bredel CIP pump is the perfect choice for reliable, accurate and gentle pumping. It can easily handle delicate ingredients such as yeast, additives and abrasive filtration agents that cause significant wear in other pump technologies. The CIP pump will help increase your uptime and decrease maintenance costs.

This hygienic and efficient pump is suitable for food and beverage companies, including a wide range of brewing applications as well as handling products like fruit puree.

The pump is particularly well suited to brewery environments, where it can reliably handle both sensitive and abrasive materials. Whether processing delicate yeast or abrasive diatomaceous earth, Bredel CIP pumps provide a robust and efficient solution.

Typical brewery applications include:

  • Yeast dosing
  • Yeast transfer
  • Flavour and colour dosing
  • Diatomaceous earth dosing for filtration
  • Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone dosing and silica gel dosing for stabilisation

About Bredel hose pumps
