Emerson selected due to strong presence in India, ability to meet challenging deadlines and proven track record automating power plants around the world

Emerson Process Management has received a contract to automate a new  810-MW thermal power plant owned by Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL). Emerson will install its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture with the Ovation® expert control system and AMS™ Suite: Intelligent Device Manager at the six-unit (6 X 135-MW), coal-fired plant to be located in Angul, Orissa, in eastern India. The captive power plant, which will ultimately generate 2,500 MW, is part of Phase 1 of JSPL’s 6 million tons per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant. As part of its comprehensive automation solution, Emerson is also providing its Scenario® high-fidelity simulation technology.

Emerson, which is executing the project through its operations in India, must meet an aggressive timeframe: first equipment delivery is due just seven months after the contract signing. The first unit is slated to come online in April 2010, followed by subsequent units at an interval of two months each.
For JSPL, Emerson’s PlantWeb digital architecture with the Ovation system will monitor and control each unit’s coal-fired boilers and balance-of-plant processes, as well as such common auxiliaries as the coal handling plant, ash handling plant, de-mineralization water plant and cooling water system. The Ovation system will also interface to each unit’s steam turbine, and all six units – as well as common auxiliary controls – will be integrated through Ovation’s multi-network technology.

In addition, Emerson will supply six of its Rosemount steam and water analysis systems (SWAS) for the new units, as well as an Uninterrupted Power Supply system (UPS). In all, Emerson’s comprehensive automation solution, which will include a total of 75 Ovation redundant controllers and 106 workstations, as well as Rosemount Analytical transmitters, will manage approximately 61,000 I/O points.

Emerson’s Scenario simulation solution will be used to train JSPL operators on the new state-of-the-art Ovation system. Emerson high-fidelity simulators are configured using control logic identical to that of the plant, and therefore offer a highly realistic training environment.
Emerson’s ability to meet the project’s challenging deadline, combined with the company’s strong presence in India and proven track record of automating power plants around the world, were key factors in JSPL’s decision to select Emerson.

“As part of our rigorous selection process, we interviewed current Emerson customers around the globe, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Anil Khanna, executive director, JSPL. “We chose Emerson based on the feedback we received, their ability to meet our tight deadline, significant power generation experience and strong regional presence.”

”The positive responses JSPL received from our existing customers is gratifying, in that it demonstrates we are succeeding at our top priority: ensuring the satisfaction of our customers,” said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. “Now, we are pleased to count JSPL among the many organizations worldwide that rely on Ovation technology to run their plants efficiently and reliably.”
