At the University of Greenwich – Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology (within the School of Engineering)
Project title: Investigation of Wear and Tribological Properties of Nano-Carbon Fabrics (NCF) Reinforced Ceramic Materials – in collaboration with Cambridge University
Earliest start date: October, 2012
Closing date for applications: 17:00hrs on Friday 13th July 2012.

In bulk solids handling, there is a common problem that the tribological interactions of equipment surface exposed with interfacing materials and environment may result in loss of material from the surface, which is known as “wear”. However, in order to prevent the wear problem, modifying the surface properties of solids is often used. Recently nano-carbon tube polymer composites developed in the University of Cambridge show some great interests in wear resistance improvement. Based on these developments, nano-carbon fabrics (NCF) reinforced ceramic materials have being developing in Cambridge. For the current study, in order to evaluate these materials developed and suggest any further modification of making such materials, detailed investigation of wear and tribological properties of the NCF reinforced ceramic materials will be carried out at The Wolfson Centre, University of Greenwich. This project will cover determination of wear and tribological properties of NCFRC materials, surface examine of the materials, elastic-plastic model of particle impact and recommendations for material modifications.

Qualification:
Applicants for this studentship should have a strong background in materials science, physics or mechanical engineering (1st Class or Upper 2nd class Honours Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree (UK or UK equivalent). Previous research experience in material science or surface engineering is desirable.

Remuneration/fees:
Although this scholarship is not limited to home/EU students, it will only cover home fees and an annual stipend of £13,590. International students will be required to settle the balance of fees.
Scholarship is for three years.

Other requirements:
This studentship may require Foreign and Commonwealth Office Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) approval for the successful candidate if from outside of the EU/EEA (depends on topic and methodologies used).  For those whose first language is not English or if from a country where English is not the first language, a language proficiency score of at least IELTS 6.5 (in all elements of the test) or TOEFL 100 ibt (600 pbt) unless the degree above was taught in English and obtained in a majority English speaking country, e.g. UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
