Accurate and safe flow measurement in hazardous conditions relies on flowmeters equipped to meet strict compliance standards. These include Explosion Proof, Intrinsically Safe, Encapsulated and Non-Sparking classifications. In many cases, installations must use equipment compliant with ATEX or similar certifications.
Titan Enterprises’ oval gear flowmeters are designed for such environments and can be fitted with either a NAMUR sensor or a reed switch (simple apparatus) for use in hazardous areas
A fully-certified NAMUR proximity switch is an intrinsically safe sensor with specific design capabilities aimed specifically at hazardous environments where explosive gases, dust, or fibers may exist.
A NAMUR switch embedded in a flowmeter with the corresponding amplifier will meet the ATEX requirements, and the device is able to give an accurate measurement in difficult conditions. Ideally, the electronics of the flow device should be housed in a safe zone or within protective enclosures.
The NAMUR sensor is a two wire device that operates on a constant voltage supply – usually 8V DC. Because the flow through the meter varies, the resistance of the sensor changes as well. Typical current trigger points are less than 1.2mA and greater than 2.1mA as the target passes over the sensor.
Due to their low power consumption and the ability to monitor resistance or current changes remotely, NAMUR sensors are widely used in specialist flow meters for hazardous zones. Output converters are available for standard signal compatibility.
NAMUR sensors are commonly employed in industries such as chemical processing, oil and gas refining and pharmaceutical manufacturing, where reliable signal transmission and intrinsic safety are essential.
