At a top Energy & Recycling Facility operated by a water company in northern England, Landia's biogas digester mixing system has just completed six years of uninterrupted service.
The plant has regularly met its goal of more than 22,000 Nm³/d (normal cubic metres per day), with Landia's externally mounted system mixing thickened sewage sludge comprehensively in two 7,306m³ digesters. With just a single pump needing overhaul in five years of continuous operation around the clock, the system's exemplary reliability has been underlined.
Paul Davies, Landia's Key Account Manager, commented: “Our GasMix system, which features Landia's Chopper Pump, has been ultra-reliable. It's simple but very effective. It just gets on with the task of ensuring that the very highest quality gas is produced because it mixes the digesters so thoroughly. Maintenance is extremely easy too because all the mechanical plant is outside the digester.”
The Energy & Recycling Facility, which began operations in 2019, is at the heart of the water company's strategy to achieve net zero carbon by 2030. It functions as a regional sludge treatment center and receives both indigenous and imported sludge in liquid and cake form.
Landia's GasMix system suspends solids and repeatedly reduces their particle size. This prevents a process-halting crust – a common event in numerous digesters – from developing at the tank top.
The Landia Chopper Pump is at the centre of the system, drawing in thick liquid from the tank bottom. Solids are chopped to speed up digestion, prevent pipes and nozzles clogging and avert grit accumulation at the tank base.
Landia's low-maintenance, robust design is still proving its value by delivering optimum biogas production and reliable operation in demanding sludge treatment processes.
