Maths in the Pipeline business challenge winners with Emerson STEM Ambassadors.
Students from Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire schools learn importance of mathematics within oil and gas industry
A ’Maths in the Pipeline’ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event has been held at the new Emerson Solutions Centre in Aberdeen. The one-day workshop, organised by Aberdeen-based charitable organisation TechFest, gave pupils from five schools an insight into how mathematics applies to real-life situations within the oil and gas industry.
The students, aged 14-15, from Northfield Academy, Fraserburgh Academy, Meldrum Academy, Kemnay Academy and The Gordon Schools, were introduced to key industry topics by Emerson’s STEM Ambassadors and solved problems on these whilst developing their team working skills. The day culminated with a demanding business challenge, with deadlines and presentation requirements.
“Maths in the Pipeline is a full day of workshops giving students a practical application of the maths they have learnt in school in an industry setting,” said Sarah Chew, TechFest Managing Director. “The event encourages students to engage with industry professionals from local oil and gas companies, such as Emerson, and apply what they learn in school to solve problems tackled daily by these professionals.”
Special guest Deirdre Michie, Chief Executive of the trade association Oil & Gas UK, gave an overview of the oil and gas business, and spoke about the important role Aberdeen has played within the industry.
“Events like this Emerson workshop really help to connect with the engineers, scientists, technologists and mathematically adept workforce of tomorrow,” said Ms Michie. “Oil and gas may be experiencing a challenging time right now but it remains an exciting and innovative industry with opportunities that can take you all over the world. I certainly hope this event will have helped encourage some students to view our sector as a great career choice.”
“Maths in the Pipeline events are a great way to engage with the next generation and highlight the importance of STEM subjects and the opportunities that exist within the oil and gas industry,” said Graham Baldwin, Emerson Human Resources Manager. “Emerson regularly hosts STEM events and the new Solutions Centre provided the ideal environment for this one.”
The Emerson Solutions Centre, located in the Dyce area of the city, opened in April and provides North Sea oil and gas industry operators with access to engineering, training facilities and operational support.
