Rising Population: Increasing Agricultural Yields and Fertiliser Usage

Listen to this article

If chickens form part of your farming business, you might read The Poultry Site; a website geared towards those working in the poultry industry. The website discusses this week how a changing diet is vital to reducing climate change. It reports on a study conducted by researchers at Cambridge and Aberdeen Universities saying that the environmental impact on food that is consumed needs to be taken into account. A shift to healthier diets across the world is just one of a number of actions that need to be taken to avoid dangerous climate change and ensure that there is enough food for all.

The research reports that, as populations rise and global tastes shift towards meat-heavy Western-style diets, increasing agricultural yields will not meet projected food demands of the expected 9.6 billion people by 2050. By this date, cropland will have expanded by 42 per cent and fertiliser use increased sharply by 45 per cent over 2009 levels. Current trends in yield improvement will not be sufficient to meet these projected demands and the study suggests that a further expansion of agricultural area will be required.

The anticipated increase in fertiliser usage of course means that farmers will have to buy more and more of this dubiously priced medium, and storing it correctly and in bulk brings with it a number of cost savings. Enduramaxx not only provides farmers with rainwater tanks and cone bottom tanks, but a number of vertical storage tanks and horizontal tanks that store liquid fertiliser at optimum condition. With liquid fertiliser tanks available in capacities up to 30,000 litres, fertiliser can be purchased in bulk and kept in huge mixed and ready to use batches, saving on preparation time too.

Get in touch to learn more about fertiliser storage and our extended range of horizontal and vertical storage tanks.
