Intelligent Heavy Duty Encoders for Demanding Applications

Listen to this article

BAUMER's latest Smart Heavy Duty Encoders are built specifically for demanding industrial applications like aggregates, steel, port, materials handling and paper mills.

These heavy-duty encoders are especially ideal for monitoring asynchronous motors and represent the optimum solution for tough applications. They belong to BAUMER's incremental heavy-duty HOG800 series and consist of three different models: value-for-money HOG840, high-performance HOG860 and HOG870 for safety-critical applications with redundant sensing.

Among their key advantages are improved resistance to corrosion, shaft currents, overvoltage and mechanical stresses. BAUMER has also integrated its proven ‘smart' features from other encoder product lines, including intelligent parameterisation of resolution, output level and direction of rotation. Advanced monitoring functions for sensor status, temperature and operating time are also included.

Compact Design for Easy Installation
The HOG800 series features space-saving housing no more than 84mm wide. Its sealed, compact design allows for simple on-site installation even in extreme environments.

One of the primary design advantages is the encapsulated sensor unit, which is sealed from dust and dirt ingress during terminal box installation and is to IP40 specifications. The terminal box itself consists of plug-in terminal contacts for easy and secure wiring, with cable protection for damage or jamming from wiring separation inside the shaft.

Talking about the HOG800 Series Variants

HOG840: Tough Operation under Harsh Conditions
HOG840 offers maximum C4 corrosion protection to DIN EN ISO 12944 standards. It is reliable under temperatures between -30 and 85ºC and supports cable lengths of up to 200 metres (HTL-P). This makes it an ideal choice for wind turbines and machines.

HOG860: Optimised for Demanding Applications
Made for use with machinery and asynchronous drives, the HOG860 provides long-term electrical protection as well as enhanced parameterisation functionality. Status monitoring is also supported, with the unit operating over a broader -40 to 100ºC range. CX-level corrosion protection for tough conditions is additionally available in the unit.

HOG870: Redundant Safety Encoder with Safety Emphasis
Engineered for safety-critical use, the HOG870 features double redundant sensing and evaluation. It has six additional outputs, which ensure secure transmission of signals and system protection.

The HOG890 model is intended for long-distance, high-speed transmission of incremental signals. With three digital switches, it delivers real-time information on standstill, speed, direction, and operating status to control units in real-time.

BAUMER's HOG800 series integrates intelligent engineering and durable design. With miniature build, sophisticated diagnostics and sturdy environmental protection, they offer dependable solutions for some of the globe's most exacting industries.
