Total’s Laggan Tomore modular project relies on FOAMGLAS® Terostat insulation

Total’s Laggan Tomore $2.5 billion project is intended to exploit 132 million barrels of reserves located 125km north west of the Shetland Islands.

The field is located on the edge of the UK continental shelf where water depths descend rapidly to 600m and beyond. It’s a uniquely challenging environment in which to operate, but also one with great potential.

Total and Petrofac decided that due to the difficult climatic and environmental conditions in Sheltand, the reception terminal would be pre-fabricated offsite and so 100 pre-assembled units were fabricated in the UAE by over 1,500 personnel working in several yards

Total and Petrofac chose to insulate the modules with $5 million dollars’ worth of FOAMGLAS® Terostat. FOAMGLAS® insulation is 100% closed cell glass and is impermeable to water and water vapour. This makes it ideal for the prevention of corrosion under insulation (CUI). The Terostat polymer coating is pre-applied in the Pittsburgh Corning fabrication workshops and gives a flexible and impact resistant weatherproof coating.

The bulk of the cellular glass insulation materials were shipped to the UAE to be applied prior to shipping the modules to the UK but significant quantities will be applied in Shetland by Bilfinger Industrial Services.

Modules and skids were also insulated throughout Europe and extensive module work has been carried out in Buckie, Scotland by TICA member Curtis Insulation. Although an experienced insulation company, FOAMGLAS® Terostat was a new system for Curtis and so Pittsburgh Corning provided familiarisation training and site support.

The results in both the UAE and in Buckie demonstrate that FOAMGLAS® Terostat is a rapidly-applied insulation system which will be a powerful tool in the fight to prevent corrosion under insulation.
