Washing Pharma, BioTech and Food IBCs Just Got Greener!

Listen to this article

Washing the Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) used extensively in the BioTech, Pharmaceutical and Food processing sectors can mean high energy and water consumption. With an eye on sustainability for manufacturing, IBC cleaning specialist Suncombe has introduced a new version of its IBCWashBooth™ which is able to recirculate the washing solutions, thus reducing water consumption by up to 80%, as well as offering additional benefits.

Users can choose to recirculate the washing solutions or maintain single pass cleaning. The choice of recirculation or single pass can be switched on or off within every step of every wash programme (recipe), allowing companies to achieve a fully repeatable, validatable recipe while, at the same time, minimising water usage without affecting the washing quality.
Suncombe has also incorporated its Spurge Bar™ technology into the booths to minimise liquid flow-rates, whilst consequently reducing consumption of cleaning additives, energy usage and effluent generation.
Commenting on this ‘greener process’ development, Suncombe director David Adams said, “Our customers are continuously looking at ways to reduce their environmental impact, but still need to ensure a completely secure and validatable cleaning regime. Our solution provides them with the best of both worlds as the recirculation function can be turned on and off at any stage of the cleaning cycle. So they can choose the optimal solution for each clean.”

The IBCWashBooth™ is a high specification unit, using an innovative spray technique and high impact accurate spray targeting. Built to hygienic and sanitary standards and complying with ASME BPE, GAMP, ISPE and 21CFR11, it is available in single door or pass through versions. The Suncombe DuoBooth™ is used on high throughput systems, where two IBCs are cleaned simultaneously in a single booth.
Other features of the unit include: 316L stainless steel construction throughout; crevice-free washing chamber; inflatable door seals for full containment; one to four chemical dosing systems; and HEPA filtered air drying and cooling.
