XYLEM FLYGT GIVES YORKSHIRE THE FLOWRIDE OF ITS LIFE

Listen to this article

Flygt, a Xylem brand, has made waves in Yorkshire’s ultimate entertainment destination, XSCAPE, by powering its two new Flow-Rider® wave machines with 4 x 90 kW PL7061-665 pumps.

The installation took place inside the newly developed ‘Flow House’, an indoor surf centre aimed at boarding enthusiasts of all levels.

Using four 90kW high volume-low head propeller pumps installed horizontally, Flygt was able to simulate the perfect surfing environment. Projecting up to 50,000 gallons of water per minute, the pumps were strategically positioned to produce a sheet of water approximately three inches deep, which is propelled at a rate of 20-30 miles per hour over a curved surface designed to emulate an ocean wave.

Paul Fookes, Business Development Manager at Xylem explains:

“The FlowRider® machines combine market leading pumping technology with a cleverly designed surface shape to give a realistic surfing experience. The Flow House in Yorkshire is a perfect example of the sorts of activity centres that are set to be developed across other major cities within the UK.

“Indoor surfing brings what were traditionally coastal sports to inner cities and offers an exciting and innovative alternative to conventional forms of exercise. We are proud to support the Flow House team in the development of the Yorkshire attraction and hope to work with them on other similar projects as the Flowhouse programme continues to evolve.”

PL pumps are traditionally used in storm-water stations and land drainage applications, but have also become a popular choice for aquaculture and water parks.
