Amarinth Enhances ADNOC Gas Operations by Fitting Remote Bearing Temperature Monitoring and Flush System

Listen to this article

Amarinth has successfully completed a pump modification project for ADNOC Gas, a major integrated gas processing company based in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Its subsidiary, ADNOC Gas, operates over 3,000 km of pipeline networks and 26 processing trains. The company supplies nearly 60% of the UAE's natural gas requirements and serves customers in more than 20 countries.

Advanced Pump Upgrade for ADNOC Gas

The project involved upgrading four API 610 VS4 vertical pumps with remote bearing temperature monitoring and flush systems. Originally supplied to ADNOC Gas by Amarinth more than a decade ago, these pumps had been operating reliably. However, recent changes in process conditions introduced a heavier particulate loading in the fluid beyond the capability of the line shaft bearings.

This innovative solution from Amarinth reduced the problem of clogging and starvation of lubrication, which often caused overheating and eventual failure of the pump. The modification included state-of-the-art RTDs that could measure real-time bearing temperatures. The probes were sheathed in stainless steel to ensure protection against the highly corrosive effects of hydrogen sulphide, H₂S, in the process fluid.

Real-Time Monitoring and Automated Protection

Real-time data from these temperature probes is transmitted through a complex array, emerging through the baseplate of the pump to a centralized dashboard. The system enables engineers to monitor and control operations remotely. Should bearing temperatures rise above a critical threshold, the system automatically shuts down the pump and initiates a flushing process, averting damage and reducing downtime.

This new approach brings major benefits in operation, such as:

  • Increased reliability and safety due to the added functionality of real-time monitoring and automatic shutdowns.
  • Less spare part requirement and maintenance downtime.
  • Increased pump life by detecting bearing failure before it occurs.
  • Economical Execution and Future Applications

Amarinth was able to design and test the refurbished pumps in under 20 weeks, showing its dexterity in delivering advanced solutions. To give further support to ADNOC Gas, Amarinth offered an optional installation service. These upgraded pumps were launched as a pilot by ADNOC Gas with the aim of considering this modification on all their VS4 pumps across various sites.

Beyond this project, Amarinth has provided specialist expertise in modifying VS4 vertical pumps for bearing temperature monitoring and flush systems, not only for its own pumps but also for non-Amarinth VS4 pumps. These enhancements can improve functionality, boost reliability, and extend the operational lifespan of all VS4 vertical pumps within an organisation's infrastructure.

Oliver Brigginshaw, Managing Director of Amarinth, said: Once again we are pleased to be able to support ADNOC, one of our longest-standing customers, in the upgrade of their existing pumps. This innovative remote bearing temperature monitoring and flush system further exemplifies the cost-effective, tailored solutions we provide for customers' specific needs. We have strengthened our relationship with ADNOC by improving their operations-without the downtime associated with installing new pumps-and have made them comfortable with us as the partner of choice.”
