Hope for Water Scarcity: Saudi Arabia’s Journey to Water Security
On World Water Day 2025, Saudi Arabia proudly showcases its incredible transformation from water scarcity to sustainability.
- Saudi Arabia has become the world’s largest producer of desalinated water, pumping out over 15 million cubic meters every single day.
- The Kingdom leads the globe in sustainable desalination technology, boasting an impressive energy efficiency rate of 2.3 kWh per cubic meter and cutting down carbon emissions by 37 million tonnes each year since 2019.
- Saudi Arabia is setting the standard for water security worldwide, with its innovative water management model being embraced internationally, establishing the Kingdom as a key advisor and exporter of water technologies.
- The Kingdom is evolving into a global hub for water technology innovation, achieving a remarkable 65% local content ratio in desalination projects, which is driving economic growth and creating high-skilled job opportunities.
The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) has rolled out the documentary “Magic of Water” to highlight the Kingdom’s inspiring journey and encourage global collaboration in addressing the world’s most urgent water challenges. Saudi Arabia’s transformation is not just a national triumph; it’s a rallying cry for the world, showing that with visionary leadership, bold innovation, and international teamwork, we can tackle even the toughest challenges.
As we celebrate World Water Day 2025, Saudi Arabia looks back on its extraordinary journey from being one of the most water-scarce nations to the top producer of desalinated water. Once defined by its dry deserts, the Kingdom has shattered expectations through pioneering leadership, strategic investments, and state-of-the-art technologies. Today, it stands as a global model for water security, sustainable water management, and environmental responsibility.
Under the watchful eye of the Saudi Water Authority, Saudi Arabia has ramped up its water production to over 15 million cubic meters a day, thanks to a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors. This impressive output showcases top-notch efficiency in energy use, capital investment, and operational costs. Water flows through a sophisticated network stretching over 14,000 kilometers, developed in partnership with the Water Transmission Company (WTCO) and private sector allies, and is distributed via more than 135,000 kilometers of pipelines, reaching both urban and rural communities. The National Water Company (NWC) takes charge of collecting and treating wastewater for reuse in irrigation, industry, and mining, working hand in hand with the Saudi Irrigation Organization.
This remarkable transformation is fueled by SWA’s commitment to cutting-edge technologies. Saudi Arabia has rolled out AI-driven desalination plants that boost operational efficiency, alongside eco-friendly water transport systems designed to minimize environmental impact. They've even come up with innovative anti-corrosion solutions inspired by palm trees to extend the lifespan of water infrastructure. These strides solidify Saudi Arabia’s status as a global leader in water technology, showcasing its unwavering commitment to sustainability, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship.
In line with the Saudi Green Initiative, SWA’s technological breakthroughs have led to an impressive annual reduction of 37 million tonnes of carbon emissions since 2019, further establishing Saudi Arabia as a frontrunner in climate action and green innovation. These sustainability efforts have also spurred economic diversification, with a 65% local content ratio in desalination projects that support economic growth and create high-skilled jobs throughout the Kingdom.
His Excellency Eng. Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Abdulkarim, the President of the Saudi Water Authority, shared some insightful thoughts: “Securing water is securing the future. At SWA, we’re not just constructing the world’s most advanced water infrastructure; we’re also reshaping how the world thinks about water security. Our successes in desalination, sustainability, and efficiency set a benchmark for others to follow.”
Saudi Arabia is also making waves on the global stage. The Kingdom is:
- Hosting the World Water Forum in 2027, solidifying its position as a leader in water security solutions worldwide.
- Creating the Global Water Organisation to promote international collaboration and innovative policy-making.
- Launching a $10 million Global Prize for Innovation in Water, aimed at inspiring groundbreaking technological advancements.
To share its remarkable journey, SWA is presenting “Magic of Water,” a documentary that highlights the human stories behind Saudi Arabia’s transformation. It honors the visionaries, scientists, and communities that have propelled the Kingdom to the forefront of global water sustainability.
On World Water Day 2025, Saudi Arabia invites the international community to rethink how we approach water security and embrace sustainable, innovative solutions. The Kingdom’s journey stands as a powerful example of what can be accomplished through visionary leadership, strategic innovation, and collective global efforts.
