Fluorinated Sealing Materials by Freudenberg Sealing Technologies

Listen to this article

Your sealing specialist for the chemical process industry, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies, provides a comprehensive range of fluorinated materials to achieve reliable sealing for almost any application.

High-performance FKM materials for aggressive chemical environments
Fluoroelastomers (FKM) are a family of materials that exhibit better chemical and thermal resistance than conventional rubber compounds. They can cope with media like acids, lyes, hot water and steam, and also with a variety of solvents.

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies' FKM product family includes materials that are resistant to extreme temperatures – from as much as +230°C (in air) to as little as -40°C.

These compounds are also resistant to a large number of chemicals as well as weathering, ageing, oxygen and ozone. When there are highly aggressive chemical conditions such as exposure to hot steam or lyes, Freudenberg's Fluoroprene® XP material family is designed to meet these demands.

Within the chemical industry, applications such as rapid gas decompression under high pressure or exposure to highly aggressive media require sealing solutions with high strength.

Freudenberg offers a range of high-performance FKM materials that address these requirements through different cross-linking systems, hardness levels and cutting-edge material technologies. In addition to the standard use of O-rings, special tailored sealing solutions or diaphragms can be supplied on request.

Among many other products, radial shaft seals made of high-quality PTFE play an important role in the chemical industry.

Sealing chemical applications using advanced PTFE materials

PTFE is a high-performance plastic with very specific properties that render it suitable almost solely for chemical applications. In comparison with rubber, PTFE offers good resistance to a large variety of media with good sliding properties and a low coefficient of friction, thereby excluding the stick-slip effect.

The material also has very good ozone and weathering resistance, good resistance to extrusion and can be used over a wide temperature range. It is flame retardant but lacks the rubbery elasticity of elastomers. By adjusting the molecular structure and utilizing special additives, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies can customize PTFE properties to match specific applications.

Different PTFE grades are supplied by the company for components such as piston seals, rod seals, radial shaft seals, chevron seals and u-cups. While some types are general-purpose all-rounders, others specialise in particular performance characteristics such as enhanced extrusion resistance or dry-running capabilities.

New fluorosurfactant-free FKM materials

Due to their excellent properties, FKM materials are used in demanding applications across many industries. In most of these applications, they still cannot be replaced with PFAS-free alternatives.

However, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies is now introducing new FKM materials that are produced without the use of fluorosurfactants. These new grades offer safer handling and cleaner production with the same high level of performance as traditional grades.

Tailored sealing solutions for aggressive chemical conditions

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies enables the reliable sealing of chemical plants with its wide portfolio, ranging from FKM, FFKM and PTFE to fluorosurfactant-free solutions. Whatever the need, there is a durable and high-performance solution to meet the most aggressive conditions.
