Rolls-Royce’s Neil Mantle Appointed to the NMIS Board

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) has welcomed Neil Mantle, who serves as the Group Director of Manufacturing Engineering and Materials at Rolls-Royce, to its Board of Directors.

With a wealth of experience in the manufacturing sector, Mantle has been instrumental in driving Rolls-Royce’s achievements in aerospace, defense, nuclear, and power systems. His broad international background in manufacturing, engineering, strategy, and execution is matched by a strong dedication to innovation, skill enhancement, and creating robust supply chains.

Previously, Neil chaired the Advisory Board for the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC)—the very foundation of NMIS—and he currently spearheads Rolls-Royce’s strategic collaboration with the University. Additionally, he serves on the advisory board of Enginuity, a charity focused on skills development, is a member of the UK Government’s Made Smarter Commission, and has held board roles at capability centers in both the UK and Singapore.

Before his time at Rolls-Royce, Mantle oversaw supply chain operations in the aerospace and automotive industries and remains deeply committed to helping similar businesses flourish in a changing industrial environment.

Neil Mantle shared his thoughts: “I’m truly honored to join the NMIS Board at such a crucial time in its development. NMIS is essential in assisting the industry to tackle significant challenges like sustainability, productivity, and skills development. I’m eager to collaborate with my colleagues to achieve meaningful results for businesses and the broader economy.”

Professor Sir Jim McDonald GBE, Chair of the NMIS Board, remarked:

“Neil brings an outstanding track record in manufacturing engineering and materials at the highest levels. His extensive industrial experience will further enhance the NMIS Board as we strive to create real business and economic benefits, supporting Scotland’s goal of being recognized worldwide for advanced manufacturing.”

Chris Courtney, the CEO of NMIS, shared his thoughts:

“Rolls-Royce has been an essential partner for NMIS, and Neil has been by our side for many years. He’s a true champion for innovation, skills development, and supply chain growth, and he’ll bring a wealth of knowledge from one of the UK’s top industrial firms. I’m excited to collaborate with him in this new role.”

Managed by the University of Strathclyde and part of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult, NMIS is dedicated to helping manufacturers of all sizes innovate, expand, and connect with top-notch research and industry expertise. By fostering collaborative innovation and leveraging cutting-edge technology, NMIS boosts productivity, enhances skills, and promotes high-value jobs, all while steering the shift towards a low-carbon, digitally advanced manufacturing future.
