SGS urges action after EU ban on bisphenols in food contact materials

Listen to this article

SGS is calling on manufacturers, importers, and brands in the food packaging and processing industries to take immediate action following the European Union's recent ban on bisphenols in food contact materials, as outlined in Regulation (EU) 2024/3190.

Set to take effect in January 2025, this regulation bans bisphenol A (BPA), its salts, and other harmful bisphenols and their derivatives from materials that come into contact with food. This move reinforces the EU's dedication to minimizing consumer exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and improving food safety throughout the single market, including the UK supply chain.

Manufacturers now have to navigate a host of new requirements. They must identify bisphenol derivatives in their supply chains, conduct compliance testing, and update their declarations of conformity. There are only limited exemptions, which apply when no suitable alternative materials are available and when migration into food is undetectable.

Historically, bisphenols have been used in coatings, adhesives, resins, and plastics to create durable and heat-resistant food packaging. However, growing scientific evidence linking BPA exposure to hormonal and developmental health risks has spurred a push for safer alternatives in food contact materials.

SGS experts also warn that this regulation could signal broader restrictions in the future. Bisphenols are present in textiles, electronics, medical products, and other consumer goods, which may lead to further regulatory changes beyond just food packaging and processing.
