Reconomy, a global frontrunner in circular economy solutions, has exciting news: their brand, Eurokey, is on the verge of completing a state-of-the-art £20 million plastic recycling facility in Corby, Northamptonshire.

Covering an impressive 138,000 square feet, this site is set to become one of the largest dedicated plastic recycling plants in the UK. It aims to create a robust, domestic closed-loop system for the country’s top supermarkets, retailers, and grocers.

Enhancing Domestic Infrastructure and Sustainability

The timing of the Corby facility couldn’t be more crucial for the UK's waste management landscape. According to recent government statistics, only about 51% of plastic packaging is recycled within the country, which means the UK is still heavily dependent on exporting waste.

By processing various grades of plastic—previously sorted at Eurokey’s Kettering facility—into high-quality pellets ready for immediate manufacturing, this new site will:

  • Boost the UK's domestic recycling capabilities.
  • Decrease reliance on virgin plastics and overseas exports.
  • Cut down carbon emissions by minimizing transportation, as it’s located less than ten miles from the Kettering sorting hub.

Economic Impact and Operational Timeline

This project is also set to give a significant boost to the local economy, creating over 30 new permanent jobs. Construction is nearing completion, and the facility is expected to be fully operational by the second half of 2026. Once at full capacity, the plant will process an impressive 38,000 tonnes of plastic each year.

Mike Benton, Managing Director of Reconomy’s Recycle Loop, shared his thoughts:

“This facility marks a major achievement for both Reconomy and the UK’s plastic recycling industry. By keeping high-quality materials circulating within a closed-loop system, we’re not only lessening our environmental footprint but also bolstering the local economy. This investment highlights our dedication to top-notch infrastructure that enables businesses to reduce waste and meet their sustainability goals.”

Zubair Bajwa, Operations Director at Eurokey, chimed in:

“For more than 30 years, Eurokey has been helping major retailers unlock their recycling potential. This new site gives us the chance to offer even stronger circular solutions. We’re especially excited to create new job opportunities in Corby and are grateful for the local community's support as we strive to deliver real environmental and economic benefits.”
