Housing Development’s Wastewater Woes Successfully Resolved by Dura Pump

A major wastewater management challenge affecting a housing development in the Midlands has been successfully resolved by Dura Pump, the fluid control specialists, following the installation of a new pumping solution designed to handle demanding operating conditions.
The project involved a leading social housing provider that manages more than 10,000 homes across the region. The organisation had been experiencing ongoing problems with its wastewater system, which was suffering from frequent blockages, flooding incidents and costly maintenance issues.
An investigation by Dura Pump revealed that the original pump installation had been under-specified for the level of occupancy at the development. As demand on the system increased, the existing equipment struggled to cope with the volume of wastewater being processed. This resulted in repeated system failures, including flooding events, pump tripping and persistent blockages caused by rag debris and other solid materials commonly found in wastewater networks.
The ongoing issues were not only causing disruption to residents but were also generating significant costs for the housing provider. Frequent emergency tanker callouts were required to deal with blockages and maintain service continuity, placing additional strain on maintenance budgets and operational resources.
To address the problem, Dura Pump's engineering team designed and delivered a solution centred around a pump capable of handling the challenging wastewater conditions more effectively. The project involved the installation of a new unit featuring an extended knife system that continuously reduces particle sizes, enabling the pump to process solids more efficiently and minimise the risk of blockages.
The upgraded system was specifically selected to tackle the increasing presence of problematic materials such as rags, wipes and other debris that are commonly responsible for failures in wastewater pumping systems.

John Calder, Technical Director at Dura Pump, explained:
“Combatting solids, rags, wet-wipes and the like are a common problem in today’s world of wastewater management. We’ve seen time and time again that standard pumps gradually become overwhelmed, leading to very frustrating issues in the housing sector.”
The installation featured a 2.2kW Landia Submersible Chopper Pump, a solution designed to provide reliable performance in applications where wastewater contains significant levels of solids and fibrous material. By continuously chopping and reducing waste particles before they can accumulate, the pump helps maintain efficient flow and reduces the likelihood of costly system interruptions.
Discussing the results achieved following the upgrade, Calder added:
“Since we installed a 2.2kW Landia Submersible Chopper Pump, there has been a dramatic improvement in performance, with no callouts required. The housing provider has drastically reduced its maintenance costs, and importantly now provides a sound, reliable wastewater service for its residents.”

The successful outcome demonstrates the importance of correctly specifying wastewater pumping equipment for residential developments, particularly where population density and occupancy levels place significant demands on infrastructure. It also highlights the growing need for robust wastewater management solutions capable of handling modern waste streams that increasingly contain wipes, rags and other materials that can cause conventional pumping systems to fail.
By eliminating recurring blockages and reducing maintenance requirements, the upgraded pumping system has delivered long-term operational benefits for the housing provider, while helping to ensure a more reliable wastewater service for residents across the development.
As housing providers and facilities managers continue to seek ways to improve infrastructure reliability and reduce operational costs, advanced wastewater pumping technologies such as chopper pumps are playing an increasingly important role in maintaining efficient and dependable wastewater networks.

In addition, Landia products are sold in 45 countries worldwide. Landia supplies pumping and mixing solutions to many different industries, with the most important ones being agriculture, wastewater, biogas plants and the fish industry. In general, you will find Landia's products wherever there is a difficult medium to be pumped or mixed. Landia survives by selling quality solutions in close partnership with the customers.
Landia is not a supermarket where customers select products from the shelves. Our technical sales people are always in close discussions with customers, which ensures solutions that work. For Landia, quality in every phase a matter of course, and we have been ISO9001 certified since 1994. Quality also means that many of Landia's products have been in operation for 20-25 years even though the operating conditions may be extreme. In that way, Landia's customers achieve the lowest lifespan costs, while resource consumption is minimised, which further results in a positive impact on the environment.
