New Silicon Carbide Heat Exchangers for corrosive media

Listen to this article

For heating, cooling, evaporating and condensing applications, the Process Solutions Group (PSG), combining Pfaudler, Tycon, Edlon and Chemineer has extended its range of Heat Exchangers to now include highly durable Shell & Tube (SCO) and Plate (ESK) types.

These new Silicon Carbide Heat Exchangers, which complement PSG’s existing glass-lined range, are designed to suit severe corrosive and wear conditions in the increasing number of applications now conducted at elevated temperatures and pressures.

Unlike traditional heat exchangers which can suffer from low corrosion resistance and low temperature stability, PSG’s range can provide extended lifetime, high thermal efficiency and virtually universal corrosion resistance, even up to 200°C.

Creating a widened range of applications, including corrosive media such as
highly concentrated Sulphuric Acid or Sodium Hydroxide, as well as fluids with high particle loadings, PSG’s SCO Heat Exchangers are free from binder, providing high purity and no contamination.

Using approved ceramic materials,  PSG’s new Shell & Tube (SCO) and Plate (ESK) have very wide thermal shock limits and are free from erosion of other materials such as polymers, stainless steel, titanium or tantalum.  PSG’s Heat Exchangers also benefit from a total non-permeability at extreme temperature and pressure, plus an anti-stick property that minimizes scaling and fouling.

When designed with a Silicon Carbide tube bundle, the SCO shell & plate type can be offered with glass or PTFE-lined tube-sheets to suit the process, with single or multi-pass options available – whilst the ESK plate type offers a more compact design and can be supplied as a sealed, semi-welded or even gasket-free unit.
