Listen to this article

United Utilities has celebrated the start of its £3.5bn AMP6 investment programme in Manchester…with a bit of VIP spadework.

Managing Director Steve Fraser made a start on the ground works at Davyhulme wastewater treatment works in Manchester, where a £200m modernisation project will be taking shape over the next four years. It’s the biggest overhaul in the history of the works, which last year marked the centenary of the invention of the activated sludge process.

The Davyhulme scheme is the single biggest wastewater investment project in United Utilities’ plan for 2015-2020 and it will be delivered by joint venture LiMA (Laing O’Rourke and Imtech, with support from Atkins).

Steve Fraser said: “We’ve got a lot to deliver over the next five years to fulfil our customer promises and improve the environment. It’s great to get started and I’m confident that we’ve got the right partners on board during AMP6 and beyond.”

Other major investment projects include a £250m new water pipeline from Thirlmere reservoir to West Cumbria.

The partners who will be helping United Utilities deliver its AMP6 commitments are:

Construction Delivery Partners who will assist with the design and build of major construction projects:
• MMB (Mott MacDonald Bentley)
• C2V+ (CH2M Hill and Volker Stevin)
• Advance (Balfour Beatty and MWH)
• LiMA (Laing O’Rourke and Imtech, with support from Atkins)

The Engineering Services Partner who will provide engineering consultancy services across the entire United Utilities business is Jacobs UK.
