To keep pace with market demand, Alfa Laval has launched the ThinkTop Basic AS-Interface valve sensing and control unit. Sharing the reliability, flexibility and durability of Alfa Laval’s proven ThinkTop range, this AS-I optimized version recognises the global preference for AS-Interface control systems in the food, beverage, brewery industries and personal care/biopharm industries.
Why AS-I?
The AS-Interface uses a single cable instead of individual discrete wires to link a Programmable Controller with sensors and actuators. An intelligent system, it is designed to be employed in a Master-Slave system where a single AS-Interface Master can exchange I/O data with up to 62 AS-Interface Slave devices and each Slave can transfer up to four inputs and four outputs on a bus cycle. AS-I provides basic but effective automation in applications where the cost or complexity of higher field-bus systems can not be justified. It greatly simplifies the installation process and reduces engineering, hardware, pre-testing and commissioning costs.
The new ThinkTop Basic AS-Interface unit exploits this cost-effectiveness and simplicity to provide automated control and monitoring of sanitary valves. Based on the successful ThinkTop sensing and control unit, the AS-Interface version delivers the right performance at a competitive price. It is ideal for use in all hygienic applications, and is compatible with all major PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems and Master Gateways using the AS-Interface specification from version 3.0.
The extension of the AS-Interface v3.0, 62 nodes into the ThinkTop Basic platform means that customers will be able to both maintain and expand their businesses at a very competitive price.
Mounted on top of the actuator of an Alfa Laval sanitary valve, the ThinkTop Basic AS-Interface comprises a sensor board and solenoid valves to provide automated control and monitoring of each connected valve. The ThinkTop platform’s proven “No Touch” and “Set & Forget” features eliminate mechanical sensor adjustments. LEDs on the unit constantly indicate the status of the automated valve: Saved valve positions, Solenoid valves energised, Set-up in progress and Local fault indication.
Installation is a straightforward procedure and requires no special expertise or expensive adaptors. Connected to one network cable and configured with a unique node address, the initial set-up of the sensor board is carried out manually using a rapid 5-touch setup.
The process operator not only saves time on installation and project costs, but also reduces life cycle cost. The ThinkTop Basic’s modular design makes it ideal for migration, upgrade and extension of existing plants.
A durable design
In common with other products in the Think Top range, the new ThinkTop Basic AS-Interface complies with the tough IP66 and IP67 standards for protecting electronic equipment against ingress of dust particles and liquids. Completely watertight, the ThinkTop Basic AS-I also incorporates vents to remove accumulated moisture and can withstand physical impact, frost, UV radiation and grease, oil or chemicals.
