Just a couple of months after The Shard’s official opening the 1020ft/310m vertical city received a huge accolade when it was announced as the project of the year at the recent Building awards. The development is perhaps the most ambitious development to date in London and has been the subject of much debate from both advocates and detractors alike.
It was designed by the architect Renzo Piano who compared his slender, spire-like design to “a shard of glass” a nickname that stuck. The building incorporates a wide range of restaurants, retail space and a spa; as well as a five star Shangri-La Hotel, all of which are open to the public. Additionally the development provides luxury residential accommodation and a significant amount of office space. There is also a multi-storey viewing gallery that in its own right is proving to be a real tourist draw and one that is expected to attract 2 million visitors each year.
