Grundfos Links to St Andrews

Listen to this article

St Andrews is known as ‘the home of golf’ for very good reason, as it was here 600 years ago that golf was first played. Today, more than 230,000 rounds of golf are played on their various courses each year and with the Old Course having hosted the Open Championship more often than any other venue, it has a huge global fan base.

Maintaining such a high profile facility is the role of St Andrew Links Trust, so when a pump station became increasingly problematic, the decision was made to replace it.

In order to determine the best solution and deliver it, Grundfos Pumps worked in partnership with MJ Abbott  to design and develop the new pump station, whose role would be to provide pressurised irrigation water to a total of five of the most high profile courses. The pump station needed to deliver a huge 575m3/hr at 8.5 bar,  to ensure it could meet peak demand and Grundfos 5 x CR120-4 and 1 x CRI20-8 pumps were selected to supply the main duty and act as the jockey pump. In addition Grundfos CUE variable frequency drives linked to a bus network, that manages the operation of the pump station and ensures the pumps are operating in the most energy efficient way possible.

The pump station has been operational for a full calendar year now and has continued to respond to all the various demands made of it, including those created by 2014 being one of the hottest summers experienced in Scotland in recent years.

Reliability is not just an option, but a prerequisite in such a high profile venue, which is why Grundfos is so frequently chosen – when it really matters – as the pump solution provider of choice.
