THE WATSON-MARLOW BREDEL 720BP – THE WORLD”S FIRST CASED PERISTALTIC PUMP WITH INTEGRAL PROFIBUS COMMUNICATIONS, DELIVERING SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVED DIAGNOSTICS FOR PROCESS PLANT OPERATORS

Listen to this article

Innovation
The Watson-Marlow Bredel 720Bp is the world”s first cased peristaltic pump with Profibus DP networking capabilities. Cased peristaltic pumps have previously been controlled via Profibus gateways, but never before has diagnostic data been available remotely via Profibus.

Plant availability is particularly important for continuous processes. The advantage of having remote access to diagnostic data is that faults can be rectified more quickly, saving the customer time and money. Real-time diagnostic information also allows for process flexibility, giving customers a competitive edge.  Patented LoadSure tube elements incorporate industrial Cam-and-Groove connectors at either end of an accurate length of peristaltic tubing. LoadSure elements allow one-minute maintenance and guaranteed element loading improves accuracy and tube life.
Other features of the Watson-Marlow Bredel 720Bp pump include a fail-safe system that stops the pump in the event of a network failure, a maintenance-free brushless DC motor that consumes 30 per cent less energy than its predecessor, sealing to IP66, and an option for a second pumphead to double the maximum flow rate to 4000 litres/hour.
Application details

The Watson-Marlow Bredel 720Bp pump is simple and quick to put into operation. Power is connected via IP66 cable glands, and a standard nine-pin connector provides the Profibus communications.
Once the pump has been registered on the network as a Profibus slave, the following can be controlled: start/stop, speed, direction of rotation, running hours, tacho count and flow calibration. In addition, other network devices can monitor the pump diagnostics.

The following data from the 720Bp pump is available via Profibus: general fault flag; software version; guard-not-closed; leak detected; over-current; over/under-voltage; over-temperature; stalled; and tacho fault.
Compared with conventional pumps, the Profibus-compatible unit reduces engineering, hardware and installation costs.
Use and relevance of the product
The Watson-Marlow Bredel 720Bp is suitable for both new projects and retrofits/upgrades in the water treatment, food and drink production, biotech and pharmaceuticals, print and packaging, pulp and paper, and other industries.
Watson-Marlow Bredel launched the 720Bp pump in response to customer requests for a Profibus-compatible cased peristaltic pump. The new pump adds the advantages of Profibus networking to the benefits of peristaltic pump technology – which include the ability to dose or transfer slurries, viscous, shear-sensitive and aggressive fluids, and all without contamination of the pump or fluid. Easy to install, simple to operate and requiring minimal maintenance, peristaltic pumps are excellent for critical processes.

Product success
Watson-Marlow introduced the Profibus-certified pump to the market in May 2008 with excellent response. While the 720Bp was the first model announced, the 520Bp and 620Bp cased peristaltic pumps with Profibus communications are also now available. Given the market demand for Profibus-compatible peristaltic pumps, Watson-Marlow Bredel will continue to develop more products that build on the benefits offered by the 720Bp.

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions

About us

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG) peristaltic tube and hose pumps meet requirements including: value for money; low cost of ownership; reliability and ease of maintenance to the food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, mining and many other industries.

We demonstrate how pumps deliver significant process efficiencies over the lifetime of the equipment. Whether performing flavouring addition in food processing, chemical metering in water treatment or mineral recovery, we have a solution which can cut pump downtime and reduce costs through higher accuracy metering and transfer. WMFTG has dedicated application engineers available to help customers make the right pump and tubing choice from a range providing microlitres per minute to 80 cubic metres per hour flow rates.

The only part of the pump to come into contact with the product is the tube or hose. This means there are no seals or valves that can wear or fail. Replacing the tube or hose can be performed quickly and safely. Peristaltic pump benefits include:

Total fluid containment with no seals No ancillaries Handle viscous and abrasive slurries and sludge Self-priming capability Dry running without damage to the pump In addition to their range of positive displacement pumps, Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group has added PTFE-lined chemical and industrial hoses to their range. Aflex hoses are reinforced to withstand the most severe conditions and use.
