ABB LAUNCHES FEATURE-PACKED FLOW METER FOR HYGIENIC APPLICATIONS

Listen to this article

ABB has announced the launch of a range of flow meters targeted primarily at the food & beverage, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Incorporating a host of new features, the HygienicMaster provides accurate measurement in hygienic applications ranging from water through to fluids with extreme viscosities, high solid concentrations or low conductivity.

Part of ABBs FlowMaster family of flow measurement products, HygienicMaster is available in sizes DN 3 to 100 (1/104) and is manufactured from FDA approved materials and certified in accordance with EHEDG and 3A hygienic requirements.

Key features include a range of process connections, offering users a wider choice during installation; electrodes that are embedded into the liner to ensure a smooth surface without any sharp edges, minimising the risk of contamination; a sensor that is fully CIP/SIP cleanable; plus a reinforced PFA liner which improves vacuum stability and prevents liner deformation, prolonging the meters operational life.

Many of the new features incorporated into the HygienicMaster are aimed at simplifying operation for users. The backlit, graphical display can be manually rotated through 270 degrees, giving users a single product which they can adjust to their needs. The use of capacitive sensor technology also allows through-the-glass data entry, enabling users to input or interrogate data for all parameters without removing the transmitter cover.

In common with ABBs latest generation of instruments, the HygienicMaster uses ABBs new universal Human Machine Interface (HMI). Using a four-button key pad and soft key technology, operators can easily scroll through and select options, simplifying operation, maintenance and training and reducing cost of ownership. Standard HART protocol enables online modification and monitoring of parameters.

Cost of ownership is further reduced by the use of a common electronics cartridge across all versions of the HygienicMaster, simplifying installation and reducing spare part costs and inventory.

Another key feature of the HygienicMaster is the inclusion of a Gore-Tex membrane into both the sensor and the transmitter. This membrane eliminates the risk of moisture ingress and condensation in humid environments or areas with large temperature fluctuations, which could potentially cause drift and measurement inaccuracy or even product failure.

The time needed to install and commission the HygienicMaster is reduced by the inclusion of advanced data storage and an on-board sensor memory inside the flow meter sensor. On initial installation, the self-configuration sequence automatically replicates all data into the transmitter, eliminating the opportunity for errors and reducing start up times. This data is continually updated to ensure total integrity of the measurement throughout operation.

HygienicMaster also features unmatched diagnostic capabilities. In accordance with NAMUR NE107, alarms and warnings are classified with status classifications such as maintenance required, function check failure, and outside of specification. The HygienicMaster can also be readily upgraded with new operating and diagnostic capabilities via its infrared service port, which enables new functions to be added without operational interruption.

All ABB flow meters are designed and manufactured in accordance with international quality procedures (ISO 9001) and are calibrated on nationally-traceable calibration rigs to provide the end-user with complete assurance of both quality and performance.
