Akona introduces Rotary Batch Mixer for gentle and repeatable dry material blending

Listen to this article

Leading material processing and handling specialist Akona Process Solutions has introduced its Rotary Batch Mixer, further strengthening its mixing and blending portfolio with a batch solution designed to deliver consistent blend quality, gentle material handling and simplified sanitation across dry bulk processing environments.

The newly launched system uses a gravity driven rotary tumbling process rather than internal paddles, ribbons or agitators. This low shear mixing approach reduces particle damage, limits segregation and minimises heat generation, while still achieving uniform blends within short cycle times. This makes it particularly suitable for formulations involving minor or trace ingredients where consistency is critical.

In contrast to conventional mixers that depend on internal shafts and seals, the Rotary Batch Mixer features a shaft free internal geometry with no submerged seals or agitator components. This design significantly lowers maintenance demands and enables faster, more effective cleaning between batches. As a result, manufacturers can achieve higher uptime, improved hygiene standards and greater batch to batch repeatability, all of which are key priorities in regulated and quality driven sectors.

According to Matt Banowetz, VP Engineering and Product Development at Akona Process Solutions: From an engineering standpoint, the Rotary Batch Mixer was designed to remove common sources of maintenance and variability found in traditional batch mixers. By relying on controlled vessel rotation and internal mixing flights, we’re able to deliver consistent blending while reducing mechanical complexity, cleaning time and product loss.

The mixer is suitable for a wide range of dry materials, including powders, granules and pellets, as well as fragile or friable products that require careful handling. It is already being applied across multiple industries such as food and bakery, nutraceuticals, coffee processing, spice blending, agricultural products, plastics and chemical powder production. This broad applicability supports manufacturers looking to standardise equipment across diverse processing lines while maintaining product integrity.

Available in multiple capacities, the Rotary Batch Mixer can be tailored to meet specific process requirements. Optional features include integrated liquid spray systems for coating or flavour addition, load cells for accurate batch weight verification, dust tight inlet and discharge valves to improve containment and PLC ready controls for seamless integration into automated production environments. These options make the system suitable for modern manufacturing facilities focused on digitalisation, process control and efficiency.

The new mixer builds on the proven performance of Marion mixing technology, combining robust construction with a straightforward mechanical design. This ensures reliable batch blending with minimal downtime, supporting operational continuity and reducing total cost of ownership over the equipment lifecycle.

Designed for manufacturers seeking predictable batch performance, gentle material handling and efficient changeovers, the Rotary Batch Mixer provides a practical and scalable solution. By improving blend consistency while simplifying cleaning and maintenance, it addresses key challenges in dry bulk processing and supports higher productivity across industries.
