AkzoNobel Powder Coatings highlights top sustainability performers with Eco+ products

Listen to this article

AkzoNobel Powder Coatings has introduced Eco+ products, a dedicated portfolio bringing together its most sustainable powder coating solutions from the Interpon and Resicoat ranges under one clear designation. The move provides greater clarity, confidence and verified performance for customers seeking more sustainable coating choices across the UK process, architectural and industrial sectors.

Designed to simplify sustainable specification, the Eco+ portfolio focuses on powder coatings that deliver measurable sustainability improvements alongside proven performance benefits in defined areas. These solutions reduce energy use, waste and carbon emissions, extend product lifespan and improve process efficiency, enabling manufacturers and specifiers to lower environmental impact while strengthening operational performance.

Data-backed sustainability criteria

Products earn Eco+ status based on measurable sustainability performance assessed against a clear and robust set of data-backed criteria. Each qualifying coating demonstrates improvement in one or more defined sustainability areas, ensuring customers can make informed and evidence-based decisions.

Every Eco+ product qualifies based on at least one of six defined sustainability benefits:

  • Reduced energy consumption through lower curing temperatures and faster curing cycles
  • Increased productivity with single-layer systems, fewer process steps and less rework
  • Less waste during manufacturing and application including reduced leftover powder
  • Reduced material consumption through right-first-time performance and optimised coverage
  • Longer-lasting performance with durable and super-durable coatings that protect assets for decades
  • Reduced carbon footprint enabled by smarter raw material choices including bio-attributed resins

By focusing on practical and measurable outcomes, Eco+ supports manufacturers working to meet net zero targets, reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and improve energy efficiency in finishing operations. Low-temperature curing powder coatings in particular can significantly cut oven energy demand, helping UK industrial facilities manage rising energy costs while advancing sustainability objectives.

Value-driven sustainability in powder coatings

Powder coatings are already recognised as one of the most sustainable coating technologies available due to their high transfer efficiency, absence of solvents and ability to minimise waste. The introduction of Eco+ builds on these inherent advantages by identifying those products that go further in delivering quantifiable environmental gains.

Powder coatings are already one of the most sustainable coating technologies available,” said Jorrit van Rijn, Marketing Director of AkzoNobel Powder Coatings. With Eco+, we make it easier for customers to see where sustainability genuinely adds value. Whether it’s lower energy use, greater efficiency or longer service life, Eco+ highlights the powder coating solutions that help customers reduce their impact while improving how their operations perform. That’s what value-driven sustainability means to us.”

This value-driven approach aligns environmental responsibility with operational performance. Rather than treating sustainability as a trade-off against durability or finish quality, the Eco+ designation demonstrates how both can be achieved together.

Clear comparison and informed decision-making

By making sustainability performance clear and comparable, Eco+ helps customers own their impact by understanding what improves, where it improves and why that matters for their business and the environment.

For UK manufacturers facing increasing regulatory pressure, ESG reporting requirements and supply chain scrutiny, access to transparent and verifiable product data is becoming essential. Eco+ supports this need by providing a consistent framework that simplifies sustainable product selection across multiple sectors.

Supporting architecture, automotive and industrial markets

The Eco+ portfolio spans a broad range of industries and applications, from architecture and automotive to appliances, functional applications and general industrial use. Across these sectors, the benefits include low-temperature curing, high durability, extended lifetime through enhanced corrosion protection and improved material efficiency.

In architectural aluminium systems, for example, durable and super-durable powder coatings can extend façade life and reduce maintenance cycles. In automotive and general industrial manufacturing, improved process efficiency and right-first-time performance reduce rework, material usage and downtime. In appliance production, optimised coverage and faster curing cycles can contribute to higher throughput and lower overall energy consumption.

By combining enhanced corrosion protection with longer coating life, Eco+ products also support asset longevity, helping infrastructure and industrial equipment withstand harsh operating environments for decades.

“With Eco+, we’re not asking customers to choose between sustainability and performance,” added van Rijn. “We’re showing that the right powder coatings can deliver both, and that’s how real progress is made.”

As sustainability targets tighten across UK industry and demand grows for low-carbon manufacturing solutions, initiatives such as Eco+ demonstrate how powder coating technology can play a practical and measurable role in reducing environmental impact while maintaining the high-performance standards required in modern production.
