Amarinth to replace obsolete submersible pumps at EDF’s Sizewell B nuclear power station
Amarinth, a world-leading designer and manufacturer of low lifecycle cost centrifugal pumps and associated equipment, has been commissioned to supply bespoke electro-submersible pumps to EDF Energy for use at the Sizewell B nuclear power station in Suffolk, UK.
The company is widely recognised for its expertise in delivering engineered pump solutions for demanding environments across offshore and onshore oil and gas industries and nuclear and renewable energy generation and defence and desalination and process and industrial markets. Amarinth’s net-zero focused approach and emphasis on whole-life cost efficiency make it a trusted partner for critical national infrastructure projects in the UK.
At Sizewell B, the new electro-submersible pumps will perform several essential duties including the removal of effluent from drainage tanks within the power station. They are being supplied as replacements for existing pumps that have reached the end of their operational life. Direct replacements were no longer available as the original equipment manufacturer had ceased trading creating a requirement for a technically equivalent and fully compliant modern solution.
EDF Energy opted to replace the pumps rather than refurbish the ageing units and turned to Amarinth due to its proven capability in supplying like-for-like replacements for obsolete pumping equipment. The decision was further supported by Amarinth’s established relationship with EDF following previous successful projects delivered across EDF’s UK nuclear estate.
To ensure the new pumps meet all operational and site-specific requirements, Amarinth engineers carried out a detailed site visit to Sizewell B. During the visit, the team assessed hydraulic performance requirements and available installation space as well as existing pipework configurations and electrical connections. Based on this detailed evaluation, Amarinth proposed a bespoke submersible pump design capable of delivering the required performance while minimising the need for any modifications to existing infrastructure.
EDF’s nuclear installation programmes require equipment to be delivered within tightly controlled outage and maintenance windows. Amarinth’s manufacturing base in Suffolk, located close to the Sizewell site, enables the company to provide a rapid response and flexible delivery schedules to support EDF’s operational planning.
Each pump will undergo comprehensive performance testing at Amarinth’s in-house test facility prior to delivery. Testing will include special adaptations to replicate site conditions and confirm that each unit meets EDF Energy’s technical specifications and operational expectations.
Amarinth is a verified Fit for Nuclear (F4N) supplier, demonstrating compliance with the high standards of operational excellence and business performance required by the UK nuclear sector. F4N verification provides assurance that Amarinth’s quality systems and manufacturing processes and continuous improvement programmes align fully with the stringent requirements of the nuclear supply chain. This gives operators such as EDF confidence in the reliability and traceability of supplied equipment.
Oliver Brigginshaw, Managing Director of Amarinth, commented:
“We are delighted to have received another order from EDF. Our relationship with EDF across its sites continues to strengthen, and this project highlights Amarinth’s ability to provide technically advanced, fully compliant pump solutions for the UK’s nuclear facilities. Being located close to Sizewell enables us to offer rapid response and on-site support, which is invaluable when working to the demanding operational schedules of a nuclear power station. We look forward to continuing our support for EDF as the Sizewell C development progresses.”
This latest contract further reinforces Amarinth’s position as a key UK supplier of engineered pumping solutions for the nuclear power sector and underlines its capability to support the long-term operation and life-extension of critical energy infrastructure.
