Amarinth awarded Innovate UK grant for next-generation multistage cryogenic pump
Amarinth has been awarded a £500,000 grant by Innovate UK to develop a next-generation multistage centrifugal pump for cryogenic LNG duties.
The company is recognised across the offshore and onshore oil and gas industry, nuclear and renewable power generation, defense, desalination, process and wider industrial markets for its innovative pumping technology.
The new award comes on the back of Amarinth's previous £250,000 Innovate UK grant, which led to more efficient design and manufacturing processes for high-efficiency pumps, culminating in the creation of a market-leading molten sulphur pump.
The new investment demonstrates Innovate UK's confidence in Amarinth's engineering expertise and its ability to meet growing demand for efficient pump technology in low-temperature fuel applications.
High-end LNG pump development
Utilising its proven cryogenic engineering expertise, including recent experience in the refurbishment of old single-stage pumps, Amarinth will design and prototype a multistage pump to handle liquefied natural gas (LNG) at around -162 °C.
Unlike traditional designs, the pump will feature advanced CFD-designed hydraulics and specifically designed impellers, offering maximum performance stage by stage.
Key objectives of the project are:
- State-of-the-art pump design: A vertical, lightweight multistage pump designed specifically for LNG service with casing and CFD-optimised impellers.
- Improved efficiency: Tailored solution to operate at the Best Efficiency Point (BEP), as opposed to up to 25% inefficiency of traditional pumps. This will reduce both energy consumption and CO₂ emissions over the life of the pump.
- Cryogenic toughness: Low-temperature carbon steels and stainless alloys with proven seal systems to guarantee reliability and integrity at -162 °C.
- Tomorrow's applications: Flexible platform for hydrogen and carbon capture. Amarinth is already “Fit for Hydrogen + Carbon Capture, Usage & Storage” (F4H2+CCUS) approved and thus ready for tomorrow's energy demand.
Facilitating the energy transition
“Innovate UK’s support reflects its confidence in Amarinth’s ability to deliver groundbreaking pump solutions,” said Oliver Brigginshaw, Managing Director of Amarinth. “This project builds on our cryogenic expertise, such as replacing a legacy argon pump operating at -186 °C, and our track record of bespoke design. By applying modern engineering to multistage cryogenic pumps, we will help the industry transition to cleaner fuels. LNG is a lower-carbon alternative to traditional fossil fuels, but only if handled safely and efficiently. Our goal is to set a new standard in LNG pumping: a highly efficient, reliable pump that can later evolve for hydrogen and carbon capture applications.”
LNG is a lower-carbon alternative to traditional fossil fuels, but only if safely and efficiently utilised. Our goal is to set a new standard in LNG pumping: an incredibly efficient, reliable pump that can then be repurposed for hydrogen and carbon capture applications.
With the support of this grant, Amarinth will supply a cutting-edge product that not only addresses current LNG demands but also places the firm at the forefront of future hydrogen and carbon capture technology.
