Amarinth defies space constraints with technical breakthrough for major LNG expansion project

Amarinth has successfully engineered a bespoke suite of API 685 VS4 magnetic drive pumps for a high profile LNG processing expansion project in the Middle East. Overcoming severe spatial constraints and complex maintenance challenges, the solution reduces construction costs while ensuring zero emission operation for critical hydrocarbon handling.

Known for its engineering agility, Amarinth was engaged to address the demanding technical requirements of in ground hydrocarbon and solvent drain drum tanks, where conventional pumping solutions were unable to meet the project’s strict spatial and safety criteria.

Overcoming extreme space limitations in LNG infrastructure

The project focused on large in ground hydrocarbon drain drum tanks measuring approximately two metres in diameter and up to ten metres in length. To optimise fabrication costs, the contractor required the upstands and downstands, the vertical sections housing the pumps, to be kept as small as possible.

Minimising this footprint was essential to reduce flange loading and material costs. However, this created a significant engineering challenge, leaving very limited space for pump installation and operation. The pumps needed to be sufficiently slender to pass through horizontal pipework during installation while still delivering the required hydraulic performance.

Impeller diameters across the various tanks ranged from 235 mm to 635 mm, demanding a design capable of handling varied flow duties without compromising efficiency or reliability.

Collaborative engineering under tight deadlines

With an aggressive project timeline, Amarinth could not wait for tank fabrication to be completed before beginning pump design. Instead, the company worked closely with the tank fabricator during the design phase, ensuring seamless integration between the pumps and the evolving tank structures.

Using advanced computer modelling techniques, Amarinth developed 5.5 metre long API 685 magnetic drive vertical pumps that maintain a slim profile without sacrificing mechanical stability. The seal less design eliminates the need for external seal support systems, improving reliability and supporting zero emission operation.

Innovative design features for enhanced performance

Amarinth’s engineering solution incorporates several key innovations to address the unique challenges of the application.

Vibration control for long shaft stability

To prevent resonance within the 5.5 metre shaft assembly, bearing spacing and configuration were carefully optimised. This ensures that the pumps remain within strict vibration limits, even during demanding startup conditions, protecting both equipment and process stability.

Gulley sucker arrangement for complete tank clearance

Unlike conventional pump designs that can leave sediment at the base of tanks, Amarinth’s gulley sucker arrangement enables effective removal of debris and contaminated liquids from the very bottom of the downstand. This helps maintain system cleanliness and supports long term operational integrity.

Optimised vantage points for safe operation

Due to restricted site access, Amarinth engineered a custom baseplate that aligns all critical gauges and instrumentation within a narrow and optimised viewing angle. This allows operators to safely monitor pump performance from a single accessible location, improving both safety and efficiency.

API 685 compliance and zero emission operation

The pumps have been designed in accordance with API 685 third edition standards, ensuring hermetic containment of volatile fluids. By eliminating traditional mechanical seals, the design removes the risk of fugitive emissions, supporting environmental compliance and enhancing operational safety in LNG processing environments.

This is particularly important in modern energy projects, where regulatory pressures and sustainability targets demand robust containment of hydrocarbons and other hazardous media.

Modular design simplifies maintenance and reduces costs

In ground tanks are typically installed at an angle, which would normally require two different pump lengths for each end of the tank. However, to simplify maintenance and reduce spare parts inventory, the project required identical pumps for both positions.

Amarinth addressed this challenge through a bespoke modular design that enables complete interchangeability. A single bare shaft pump can be used in either position during maintenance, significantly reducing inventory requirements and simplifying long term servicing strategies.

This approach delivers tangible cost savings while also improving operational flexibility for plant operators.

Accelerated delivery through innovative manufacturing strategy

To meet the demanding project schedule, Amarinth implemented a split delivery methodology developed in collaboration with its supply chain partners. This approach bypasses traditional manufacturing bottlenecks, such as waiting for full order completion before delivery.

Instead, tested batches of pumps are manufactured and delivered in parallel with tank fabrication. This ensures that as soon as each tank is completed, the corresponding pumps are already on site and ready for installation, minimising delays and supporting rapid project progression.
