Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) recently opened its new state of the art BEACON Biorefining Centre to help businesses develop new ways to turn locally grown plant crops such as rye grass, oats and miscanthus into commercial products such as fuel and cosmetics. The £20 million BEACON Biorefining project, backed with £10.6million from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, is the first of its kind in Wales and has been developed in collaboration with partners in the Universities of Bangor and Swansea.
The BEACON Centre, which combines various biorefining technologies and expertise, houses pilot scale equipment designed and built by filtration specialists, Axium Process, including the integrated wet feedstock processing line, pasteuriser and membrane filtration pilot plants utilising ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technologies for processes including fractionation, concentration, clarification and water conservation.
Axium Process works with a number of Universities where its expertise in the concentration and separation of liquid streams is being used on a number of ground breaking projects.
