Blueshift launches AeroZero® ultra-low outgassing thermal protection tapes for aerospace and satellite applications
Key points
Blueshift, the leader in next-generation thermal protection systems (TPS), has launched its latest innovation – AeroZero® ultra-low outgassing Thermal Protection Tapes. These thin, lightweight and easy-to-apply tapes are capable of withstanding extreme thermal conditions from –200°C to +2,400°C and offer a high-performance solution for future satellite and aerospace designs.
Solving thermal challenges in space
Within space vehicles, in the space vacuum, the thermal management challenge is significantly greater. Satellites, space craft and science instruments are subject to severe and frequent thermal cycling, particularly in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Satellites there see temperatures ranging from –170°C to +120°C on a 90-minute cycle, to as many as 16 times per day.
“With its low thermal conductivity and withstanding extreme temperatures, AeroZero® ultra-low outgassing TPS provide the ultimate protection in such hostile environments – without weight or bulk increase,” said Tim Burbey, President of Blueshift. “Our customers needed a product that would survive brutal heat cycling in severely confined spaces.”. We supplied an ultra-thin, high-performance thermal tape that meets tight design envelopes—then optimized it for ultra-low outgassing when spaceflight requirements demanded it. It's the ideal fit for next-generation LEO satellites and beyond.”
Proven performance in aerospace applications
With more than 10,000 ft² currently in service on spacecraft, AeroZero® thermal protection tapes are designed to withstand rigorous thermal cycling in orbit and high-vacuum environments. Through minimised fogging, degradation and interference, they safeguard delicate optics, sensors and infrared detectors.
The flexible, thin, lightweight form allows engineers to integrate the tapes into close design plans easily. Their ‘peel and stick' application reduces installation time by simplifying the process.
Meeting NASA outgassing specifications
The AeroZero® tapes are compliant with the NASA Outgassing Standard (ASTM E595) for low levels of spaceflight and vacuum contamination. They release not more than 1.0% total mass loss and as low as 0.10% condensable material under high vacuum and high temperature exposure – essential to maintaining optical and sensor performance.
Facilitating LEO megaconstellations and satellite growth ahead
With huge projects such as Amazon's Project Kuiper planning to deploy more than 3,200 satellites, and market analysts pegging more than 4,150 new LEO satellites within five years, the demand for ultra-thin ultra-lightweight thermal management systems is expected to increase manyfold. Blueshift's AeroZero® tapes will enable developers to design lightweight, thermally resilient spacecraft without compromising on reliability.
Product range
Blueshift has launched two varieties of AeroZero® low-outgassing thermal protection tapes:
- 1O2 – engineered for specific adhesive performance specifications
- 1O4 – engineered for enhanced application flexibility
Both types are designed to meet aerospace, defence and high-vacuum applications where thermal stability, low outgassing and light weight are critical.
