Book a Rittal Climate Management Review
Karl Lycett – Rittal UK’s Product Manager for Climate Control
Winter may have been the focus of the hugely popular TV drama Game of Thrones but in the real world the mercury is rising and we will soon be firmly into summer.
Despite any rainclouds that may still be lingering, don’t be fooled. Summer will bring higher temperatures, which may be good for the weekend BBQ, but it doesn’t bode as well for your electrical equipment.
At this point in the year, the alarms on your cooling units will probably still be non-existent which means you’re spending less time maintaining overheating panels. However, this is the ideal time to start considering your climate control, to understand what changes or improvements need to be made.
In a few months’ time, things will be very different. Fans and filters won’t be effective if the ambient temperature in the workplace is higher than you require inside your enclosures! So now’s the time to assess any problem enclosures and make the necessary changes to ensure that when summer comes you are free to spend your time on tasks other than climate management.
Every Degree above Set-Point Shortens Equipment Life
It’s important to remember that every degree above your set-point will be time removed from the life of your expensive equipment, including PLCs, variable speed drives and transformers.
Collectively, this can easily have a replacement value that tops £100,000, even in a relatively small setup. If you replace just two per cent of that equipment each year because of burnt-out componentry, then the costs can quickly mount up and it’s an entirely unnecessary spend.
But it’s not just the cost of repair and replacement of the actual componentry. There are also the add-on operations costs caused by componentry breaking down and stopping the processes it controls. This lost output will continue for as long as it takes to repair the fault, and is bound to have consequences for your wider business, impacting productivity and efficiency, and thereby reducing profits.
