Carrots are tops for glowing Landia Chopper Pumps
Providing essential aeration in settlement pits, Landia Chopper Pumps have completed a decade of reliable service at one of the UK’s leading carrot producers. The installation highlights how robust wastewater pumping technology supports high volume food processing operations, particularly in agricultural and vegetable washing environments where fibrous solids and grit can create ongoing operational challenges.
At a site in the North of England, around 30,000 tonnes of carrots are processed each year across 900 acres of prime sandy farmland. Within this demanding production environment, the 11 kW Landia units have consistently managed effluent from the carrot washing process, which relies on recirculated lagoon water.
Over ten years of continuous operation, the pumps have required no breakdowns or rebuilds, demonstrating exceptional durability in a challenging application.
Proven performance in demanding food processing wastewater
The design of the world’s first Chopper Pump, invented by Landia in 1950, has remained largely unchanged for more than 75 years. Its external knife system continuously reduces particle size, preventing blockages in wastewater systems that handle high levels of organic and fibrous material.
This proven engineering approach is particularly effective in vegetable processing environments, where carrot tops, soil residue and fibrous waste can quickly overwhelm conventional pumping equipment. By actively chopping solids before they enter downstream systems, the technology helps maintain consistent flow and reduces the risk of costly downtime.
Long term reliability in UK agricultural processing
Tamas Rieder, Landia’s Service and Aftersales Manager, commented: “We are very proud of the performance of these pumps and our service engineers who carry out such a consistently high level of work. Ten years of operation with no major problems is quite a record, but we have numerous pumps that are still working just fine after 15 and 20-years-plus service.
He added: “We work as closely as possible with our customers, gaining an increasing number of service contracts, but even if we don’t regularly carry out the maintenance ourselves, we are always ready to help at the end of ‘phone, and then get to site promptly, if required.”
These long service lifetimes underline the value of robust pump design in the UK food processing sector, where unplanned downtime can significantly impact production schedules and operational efficiency. Reliable wastewater handling is essential in maintaining compliance and ensuring smooth operation across washing and processing lines.
Expanding applications across vegetable processing industries
In addition to carrot washing effluent management, Landia’s technology is widely used across similar applications in the vegetable and food processing sectors. This includes work with HAYLEY DEXIS at a company specialising in machines for post harvest vegetable processing.
In these environments, wastewater often contains a combination of fibrous material, grit and organic solids that can quickly lead to blockages in standard pumping systems. Landia Chopper Pumps, equipped with external shredding systems, have been deployed to replace equipment from other manufacturers that was unable to handle these challenging conditions.
Designed for difficult wastewater solids
Originally developed for demanding wastewater applications in the fish processing industry, the Landia shredder propeller design has proven highly effective in handling problematic stringy materials. This includes carrot tops and other fibrous vegetable waste that commonly cause operational issues in conventional pumping systems.
Gary Wharton, Sales Team Leader for Landia, explained: “Our pre cutting shredder propeller brings another important chopping stage for certain effluents with difficult solids, as it continuously reduces particle size to keep process lines running efficiently.”
By reducing solids before they enter downstream systems, the technology helps maintain continuous operation, reduces maintenance requirements and supports more efficient wastewater management in food processing facilities.
Supporting efficiency in UK food manufacturing
As UK food producers continue to focus on efficiency, sustainability and operational resilience, robust wastewater management systems play an increasingly important role. Reliable pumping technology not only prevents blockages and downtime but also supports environmental compliance by ensuring effective handling of process effluent.
The decade long performance of Landia Chopper Pumps in carrot processing demonstrates how proven engineering solutions can deliver long term value in demanding agricultural and food production environments.

About us
Landia's headquarters are located in Lem, which is how it has been since 1933. Today, Landia has subsidiaries in England, Germany, Norway and the US, and a sales office in China. In addition, Landia products are sold in 45 countries worldwide. Landia supplies pumping and mixing solutions to many different industries, with the most important ones being agriculture, wastewater, biogas plants and the fish industry. In general, you will find Landia's products wherever there is a difficult medium to be pumped or mixed. Landia survives by selling quality solutions in close partnership with the customers.
Landia is not a supermarket where customers select products from the shelves. Our technical sales people are always in close discussions with customers, which ensures solutions that work. For Landia, quality in every phase a matter of course, and we have been ISO9001 certified since 1994. Quality also means that many of Landia's products have been in operation for 20-25 years even though the operating conditions may be extreme. In that way, Landia's customers achieve the lowest lifespan costs, while resource consumption is minimised, which further results in a positive impact on the environment.
