Degasser for volatile and aggressive solvents

Listen to this article

Biotech Fluidics has introduced the DEGASi® Integration HFIP, a high performance online degassing system engineered to handle even the most challenging solvents used in analytical and laboratory environments.

Designed for compatibility with volatile and aggressive liquids, the system can efficiently degas substances such as Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) and silanes, while also supporting all common solvents used in GPC, SEC and HPLC applications.

As laboratories across the UK and Europe continue to demand higher precision and reliability from analytical instrumentation, effective solvent degassing plays a critical role in maintaining system performance. The presence of dissolved gases can lead to baseline noise, reduced detector sensitivity and inconsistent results, making advanced degassing solutions increasingly important.

Addressing the challenges of HFIP in chromatography

HFIP is widely recommended for demanding liquid chromatography separations, particularly for polar polymers and peptides that are not soluble in conventional organic solvents. Its unique chemical properties make it highly effective in these applications, but they also introduce significant challenges.

Due to its highly polar, strongly acidic and volatile nature, HFIP can be difficult to manage using standard degassing technologies. Traditional degassing chambers may struggle to maintain stability or durability when exposed to such aggressive solvents, potentially leading to reduced performance or increased maintenance requirements.

The DEGASi® Integration HFIP has been specifically developed to overcome these limitations. By providing robust compatibility with HFIP and similar solvents, it enables laboratories to carry out complex separations with greater confidence and consistency.

Flexible performance for analytical and semi preparative workflows

To accommodate different laboratory requirements, the DEGASi® Integration HFIP is available with two distinct degassing chamber configurations. These are designed for analytical and semi preparative applications, offering maximum flow rates of up to 3 mL per minute and 6 mL per minute respectively.

This flexibility allows the system to be integrated into a wide range of chromatography setups, from routine analytical testing to more demanding preparative processes. By ensuring efficient gas removal across varying flow conditions, the degasser helps maintain stable baselines and improves overall data quality.

Integrated monitoring for enhanced control

A key feature of the DEGASi® Integration HFIP is its built in integration capability. The system provides an output signal that corresponds to the internal vacuum level, rated at 5 mV per mmHg. This enables continuous, real time monitoring by connected instrument assemblies and control software.

For laboratories focused on digitalisation and process control, this functionality supports improved visibility and traceability. Operators can monitor degassing performance directly within their existing systems, helping to identify potential issues early and maintain optimal operating conditions.

Stable and low noise operation

As with all DEGASi® Integration systems, the HFIP variant is designed to deliver quiet and trouble free operation over an extended service life. Its internal patented closed loop vacuum control ensures ultra stable degassing performance, which is essential for high precision analytical work.

By minimising pressure fluctuations and maintaining consistent vacuum levels, the system reduces baseline noise and enhances the sensitivity of analytical measurements. This is particularly valuable in applications such as HPLC and SEC, where even minor disturbances can affect data accuracy.

Efficient solvent exchange and user friendly design

Ease of use is another important consideration in laboratory environments. The DEGASi® Integration HFIP features a low swept volume and an efficient channel design, allowing solvents to be exchanged quickly and with minimal disruption.

This capability is especially beneficial in laboratories that handle multiple solvent systems or frequently change analytical methods. Faster solvent exchange reduces downtime and improves overall workflow efficiency, supporting higher productivity.

Supporting high precision analytical applications

As analytical techniques continue to evolve, the need for reliable and robust solvent management solutions becomes increasingly critical. The DEGASi® Integration HFIP provides a specialised solution for laboratories working with aggressive and volatile solvents, ensuring consistent degassing performance across a wide range of applications.

By enabling stable operation, reducing noise and supporting real time monitoring, the system helps laboratories achieve accurate and reproducible results. For organisations working in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and advanced materials research, this level of performance is essential for maintaining quality standards and meeting regulatory expectations.
