Media separated pressure relief valve protects components and optimises control

Listen to this article

Flow control specialist Bürkert has introduced a new pressure relief valve designed to protect sensitive components in fluidic systems from high pressure peaks while delivering full media separation for use with aggressive or sensitive liquids.

Developed for analysis, biotechnology and laboratory environments, Bürkert’s Type 5550 valve enables complete liquid isolation, ensuring fluids remain contamination free while preventing the loss of high value substances. In addition, the valve supports precise pressure control and stable back pressure management across various applications.

In modern laboratory and analytical systems, where precision and repeatability are essential, maintaining stable pressure conditions is critical. The Type 5550 valve addresses this requirement by safeguarding sensors and microchannels from pressure spikes that could otherwise compromise measurement accuracy or damage delicate components.

Installed in a parallel circuit alongside pressure sensitive elements, the valve automatically opens to relieve excess pressure, preventing surges and ensuring system integrity.

Reliable system protection for critical processes

The Type 5550 valve offers robust protection for fluidic systems operating under variable pressure conditions. By mitigating pressure peaks, it helps to extend the lifespan of sensitive instrumentation and reduce the risk of costly downtime in laboratory and biotech settings.

When integrated in series within a circulation system, the valve stabilises overall system pressure and supports consistent flow rates. This is particularly important in applications such as dispensing and sample handling, where reproducibility is vital.

By maintaining steady operating conditions, the valve enables accurate and repeatable results, which are essential for quality assurance and regulatory compliance in UK and European laboratory environments.

The valve can also generate and maintain constant system back pressure, making it well suited to dosing applications. Excess fluid generated during pressure regulation is returned to the system in a controlled manner, ensuring efficient fluid management while preserving valuable media. This contributes to improved process efficiency and reduced operational waste.

Precise pressure control for reproducible results

Achieving consistent process conditions is a key priority in analytical and life sciences applications. The Type 5550 valve provides precise pressure control by matching system pressure to the specific requirements of the process. This ensures a stable working pressure for measurement, analysis and dispensing tasks.

By creating a controlled pressure range suitable for volumetric pumps such as diaphragm and gear pumps, the valve enhances system performance and reliability. Installed in a parallel circuit, it can apply pressure compensation upstream of the process chain, maintaining balance regardless of fluctuations in delivery rate or changes in the medium being handled.

This level of control is particularly valuable in microfluidic systems and advanced analytical platforms, where even minor pressure variations can impact results. By ensuring stable and predictable conditions, the valve supports high precision workflows and improves overall process confidence.

Complete media separation and contamination prevention

One of the defining features of the Type 5550 valve is its ability to provide full media separation. The integrated diaphragm ensures that fluids remain isolated from the valve's mechanical components, preventing contamination and maintaining maximum purity.

This is especially important in applications involving sensitive, reactive or high value substances, where contamination could compromise product quality or lead to significant financial loss.

The valve also prevents the loss of expensive media by returning fluid released during overpressure events back into the system, supporting both cost efficiency and sustainability.

Flexible design for demanding applications

The Type 5550 valve has been engineered for flexibility and compatibility across a wide range of fluidic applications. It is available in multiple material configurations, enabling it to handle aggressive chemicals as well as sensitive biological media.

USP and FDA compliant options are available, making the valve suitable for regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Seals and diaphragms can be specified in EPDM, FFKM and FKM, while housing materials include PPS and PEEK. The inclusion of a stainless steel spindle further enhances durability and resistance to harsh operating conditions.

These material options allow the valve to be integrated into diverse applications, from analytical instrumentation and diagnostic systems to bioreactors and process development platforms.

Bürkert’s new Type 5550 valve maintains a constant working pressure for measurement, analysis, or dispensing applications.

Simple integration and long term reliability

Ease of integration is a key advantage of the Type 5550 valve. It can be installed directly within the fluidic setup without the need for additional tubing or external control systems, simplifying system design and reducing installation time.

The compact footprint and flange interface enable straightforward installation within plant environments or distribution systems, while a surface mount configuration is also available for seamless integration into microfluidic assemblies. This makes the valve particularly attractive for modern compact system designs where space is limited.

Once installed, the valve operates without the need for routine maintenance, reducing operational overhead and supporting continuous operation. Its robust construction ensures long term reliability, even in demanding laboratory and industrial environments.

Enhancing performance in laboratory and biotech systems

As laboratory and biotechnology processes become increasingly sophisticated, the need for precise pressure control and reliable system protection continues to grow. Bürkert’s Type 5550 pressure relief valve provides a comprehensive solution that combines performance, flexibility and durability.

By protecting sensitive components, ensuring contamination free operation and enabling accurate pressure control, the valve supports high quality outcomes across a wide range of applications.

For organisations seeking to optimise fluid handling systems, improve efficiency and maintain strict quality standards, advanced pressure relief technology is becoming an essential component of modern process design.
