Earliest users give ‘trouble-free’ OriMaster the thumbs up
ABB’s new orifice plate meter gets glowing praise from Northern Foods subsidiary
The recently released OriMaster compact orifice plate meter from ABB has so far proved to be “reliable and trouble-free,” according to its earliest users. “I have to say it’s wonderful,” says Warren Allison, environmental manager at Northern Foods’ Cavaghan & Gray site in Carlisle, which was among the first test sites for the new meter.
By integrating the entire metering assembly into a single unit, the OriMaster eliminates the most common leak paths associated with conventional orifice meters. In addition, by eliminating the need for users to source and install components such as the manifold, transmitter and impulse piping separately, the meter’s all-in-one construction typically cuts the cost of installation and commissioning by up to 50%.
Another common problem with orifice meters is an error of up to 3% that can be introduced if the orifice is not centred precisely within the pipe. Every OriMaster therefore comes complete with a centering tool, ensuring that the meter is positioned correctly.
Cavaghan & Gray is part of Northern Foods and manufactures ready meals at its site in Carlisle. The company installed the OriMaster to measure steam from its main boiler at the same time as it installed a Sensyflow iG thermal mass meter from ABB to measure the natural gas flowing to the boiler. The flow signals from the two meters are brought together and recorded using an SM500 videographic recorder, which was also supplied by ABB, through Solway Instruments, a local instrumentation company.
“It’s part of an ongoing programme to update our monitoring systems,” says Mr. Allison. “We do have quite a lot of metering around the site already, but we had nothing on the steam and gas before. Now we can clearly see the impact of changing production operations on the boiler room for the first time.”
The new flow meter comes in two versions: the OriMaster V for volumetric readings and the OriMaster M for mass flow.
OriMaster V suits general-purpose volume measurement. It features a stainless steel transmitter housing and meter body and provides an optional flow rate and total display as well as an analogue output.
OriMaster M provides measurements directly in mass or corrected volume units. It uses ABB”s 267CS multivariable transmitter to measure differential pressure, temperature and pressure, and provides an optional display and analogue output. In addition to its stainless steel 316L body and alloy transmitter case (which is optionally available in 316 stainless steel) OriMaster M can be supplied complete with an optional PT100 temperature sensing assembly mounted within the flow sensor.
Both the OriMaster V and OriMaster M have HART communications. OriMaster M has the additional options of Profibus PA, Foundation Fieldbus or Modbus communications. To further simplify the selection process, ABB supplies a free online sizing, selection and coding software tool.
