Endress+Hauser Group mourns company founder
Dr Georg H Endress has passed away at the age of 84 –
Family and Foundation guarantee the continuation of his life’s work
The Endress+Hauser Group is mourning its company founder Dr Georg H Endress. The entrepreneur died on 14 December 2008 after a brief illness a few weeks before his 85th birthday, surrounded by his family in Arlesheim, Switzerland. Employees of the family-owned Group around the world reacted with sorrow at the news. Their deepest sympathies are conveyed to his wife Alice Endress-Vogt and the Endress family. As an entrepreneur and patron, Georg H Endress leaves a thriving company, distinguished by its farsightedness and courage.
The core of Georg H Endress life’s work is the establishment of the Endress+Hauser Group. From small beginnings, the Group developed into an international company for industrial measurement and automation engineering with over 8,300 employees worldwide and operating 80 companies in 39 countries.
Visionary and charismatic entrepreneur
In 1953 the young Swiss engineer Georg H Endress formed a partnership with the experienced banker Ludwig Hauser. Based in the German town of Lörrach, the new company was initially a distributor of new electronic level measurement devices. Since 1975, the Endress family has had sole ownership of the Group and G. H Endress lead the development of the company from a specialist in level measurement to a provider of complete solutions for industrial measuring technology and automation, continually breaking into new markets.
Family and Foundation carry on his life’s work
Georg H Endress leaves behind a well-ordered legacy. He had withdrawn from business operations back in 1995, handing the leadership of the company Group to his second oldest son, Klaus Endress. Nevertheless, as a member of the Supervisory Board, he played an active part in the successful development of Endress+Hauser until shortly before his death. In spite of his enormous business and voluntary commitments, the family always held a key position for Georg H Endress. He had been married to Alice Vogt since 1946 and they had eight children together. All four sons and one daughter are actively employed in the company today.
The children and their families, who each hold 12 percent of the shares in the Group, will carry on Georg H. Endress’ work as an entrepreneur. In their Family Charter, the members of the second and third generation pledge to maintain Endress+Hauser as a successful company in family ownership – as a company that is committed to the principles of sustainability and social responsibility. Georg H Endress’ commitment to the Basel region and his dedication to the furtherance of young people will be carried on by the charitable Georg H Endress Foundation, which is endowed with 4 percent of the company’s shares.
