Endress+Hauser – Meeting the highest demands in level measurement
Key points
No matter how challenging the application, Endress+Hauser’s new generation of 80 GHz radar sensors makes processes simpler, more efficient and safer.
The new Micropilot FMR6xB group is the solution for the most complex radar tasks. Designed for demanding applications in the chemical and oil & gas industries and to meet the rigorous requirements of hygienic applications in the life sciences and food & beverage industries, Micropilot offers the highest accuracy, reliability and versatility in level measurement.
Users of measuring technology know how important it is to increase plant and process productivity while maintaining the highest safety standards. To improve process performance and avoid interruptions, shutdowns and the associated costs, it is essential to monitor levels in large tanks, reactors or reactor vessels at all times. The same applies to the timely detection and elimination of anomalies such as foam and build-up or changes in loop resistance.
The Micropilot range offers a high level of accuracy due to its advanced 80 GHz technology, which has the advantage of a more direct beam angle and compact antenna design. This leads to more reliable and accurate measurement in tanks with obstacles and in challenging conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures and dusty or corrosive environments. Due to smaller process connections, 80 GHz devices are perfect for confined installation situations.
Maximum safety for staff, plants and processes
To ensure the highest level of safety for staff, processes and plants, process industries depend on proven technology for non-contact level measurement, particularly in the case of changing, challenging or hazardous media.
The new Micropilot range has been developed in accordance with IEC 61508 using Endress+Hauser's decades of SIL expertise, with the result that they can be deployed directly in SIL 2 circuits. They can also be used in SIL 3 circuits with homogeneous redundancy.
Malfunctions in plants often have serious consequences for the environment, people and equipment but, due to Endress+Hauser’s in-depth SIL expertise, the safety risks can be systematically reduced and testing costs effectively decreased.
Meeting the most rigorous compliance requirements
Hygienic applications, on the other hand, are subject to the strictest compliance requirements, and precision and efficiency are key factors. The Micropilot FMR63B is suitable for a wide range of hygienic applications from bioreactors to mixing tanks to storage and fermentation tanks.
It also proves reliable in hygienic solids applications, such as milk powder or medication production. With all the required certification and compatibility with external cleaning products, it can be easily installed even in cleanrooms and similar environments where strict levels of hygiene apply, for example ultrapure water tanks.
Safe and simple operation
All the products in the new Micropilot range are easy to install and operate due to the intuitive user interface, which means no significant training is required. Integrated assistants (wizards) ensure error-free and safe commissioning and SIL locking of the measuring devices. As well as saving time, the wizards virtually eliminate operating errors, ensuring the measuring technology – and consequently the plant – is operating safely.
In addition, undervoltage detection prevents the occurrence of dangerous plant conditions. In the event of a fault, the colour display changes from green to red, enabling the user to spot possible hazards or error messages at a glance.
The technology also reduces typical risks posed by dangerous substances, harsh environments or potential explosions to an absolute minimum. For example, staff can remain outside the danger zone during analyses, controls, maintenance and inspections.
This is because all tasks can be carried out remotely via Bluetooth and Endress+Hauser’s SmartBlue app and, for the first time, quickly and easily via the integrated web server using Ethernet-APL. This is also of benefit in locations that are difficult to access.
In hazardous areas, the devices can be inspected via operating keys when closed. Highly resistant materials protect the device against extreme process conditions and enable it to be used at high temperatures up to 450°C.
The broad product portfolio includes various housing versions for a range of installation situations. Thanks to its compact design, single-chamber versions made of plastic or aluminium can be used in confined installations. There’s also the option of a remote display for inaccessible locations.
Exceptional measurement performance
The 80 GHz Micropilot range not only offers the highest level of safety but also increases the productivity of industrial processes due to the exceptional measurement performance of the newly developed radar chip.
The measuring devices easily cope with the high process pressures and temperatures that occur in reactors or reactor vessels. The narrow beam angle and excellent signal focus ensure the highest possible level of accuracy even in large tanks and in the presence of agitators or heating coils. Exceptional measurement results at ranges of up to 125 metres are standard for the new product series.
Developments such as Heartbeat Technology and Ethernet-APL, and the associated availability of real-time data, play an important role here by minimising process interruptions. The Heartbeat Technology test and verification function developed by Endress+Hauser provides reliable diagnostic and monitoring data.
Continuous monitoring enables process anomalies such as foam formation or build-up on the device antenna to be detected early on, which in turn enables predictive maintenance and reduces the risk of plant downtime. Device verification can be performed in less than three minutes without removing the device or interrupting the process.
Calibration cycles can be extended significantly with our patented Radar Accuracy Index (RAI) technology, by carrying out a traceable verification in accordance with ISO 9001 to analyse the measurement drift since the device was manufactured. This means that you always have insight into the accuracy of your measuring device.
Ready for Industry 4.0
State-of-the-art communication options, such as Profibus PA, HART and the innovative Ethernet-APL, further increase plant availability. Ethernet-APL makes fast, digital data transmission possible over long distances and in explosive atmospheres. The new technology meets all the requirements of process plants and essentially brings Ethernet and all of its benefits into the field of process automation.
Ethernet-APL fully enables digitalisation in the process industry and in all life cycle phases. Thanks to easy integration into asset management systems and smart self-diagnostics, it helps to avoid plant shutdowns and increase production output.
The new generation of Micropilot 80 GHz radar sensors increases safety for people and systems and will prepare any plant for its digital future. To find out more visit Radar level measurement | Endress+Hauser
