Quality Compost from Borger Pump and Macerator

Borger has completed the installation of a new pump and macerating system for a processing plant that converts food waste into nutrient-rich compost.

The custom-built system combines an auger, grinder and rotary lobe pump to provide a robust solution for handling and processing challenging food waste. The equipment methodically moves and reduces acidic food waste, preparing the material for the composting process while providing reliable and consistent handling.

For food waste processing facilities, the ability to efficiently reduce solids before pumping can be an important part of maintaining reliable plant operation. The Borger system has been designed specifically around the requirements of the application, providing an integrated approach to maceration and pumping.

Robust food waste processing

Featuring an auger, grinder and rotary lobe pump, the highly robust Borger system methodically moves and reduces acidic food waste, ready for composting.

Food waste can present demanding pumping conditions, particularly where solids need to be reduced and homogenised before being transferred through the process. By combining the individual stages within one system, the equipment is designed to provide an effective method of preparing the waste for onward processing.

The system has also been designed with maintenance requirements in mind. Designed with Borger’s Maintenance-In-Place for ease of servicing, the reliability of the custom-built system greatly reduces downtime.

Minimising downtime is particularly important for food waste processing and composting facilities where equipment availability can have a direct impact on plant productivity. Easy access for servicing can help operators carry out maintenance efficiently while reducing disruption to the overall process.

Borger Multicrusher for effective maceration

By macerating the solids so efficiently, the Borger Multicrusher homogenises food waste to help facilitate the most effective pumping process.

The maceration stage helps reduce the size of solids within the food waste stream, producing a more homogeneous material for pumping. This can be particularly beneficial where food waste contains challenging or fibrous solids that could otherwise make pumping more difficult.

The use of maceration technology alongside a rotary lobe pump provides an integrated solution for food waste handling, helping operators to move material efficiently through the processing system.

Borger’s pumping and maceration technology is also used across the anaerobic digestion and biogas sectors, where reliable solids handling and effective feedstock preparation are key parts of the process.

Pumping and maceration for anaerobic digestion plants

In addition to composting, Borger’s pumps and macerators are widely used at biogas/AD plants, including the award-winning Creed Integrated Waste Management Facility on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland.

Here, a Borger Multicrusher chops a 7-cubic tonne batch (per shift) of waste salmon. The technology guarantees the shred of waste salmon to meet stringent regulations for the safe use of digestate as a renewable fertiliser, by cutting the waste to the required maximum particle size of 12mm.

The application demonstrates how maceration technology can be used to prepare difficult organic waste streams for further treatment. In this case, the Multicrusher provides the required reduction of waste salmon to achieve the specified maximum particle size before the material is processed further.

The effective preparation of organic waste is an important consideration in both composting and anaerobic digestion applications. In AD plants, pre-treatment can help produce a suitable feedstock for the biological process while supporting reliable handling of the material through the plant.

Rotary lobe pumps for UK biogas plants

Borger’s technology is also used at Singleton Birch’s anaerobic digestion facilities in Northern Lincolnshire.

Also, at three Singleton Birch biogas plants in Northern Lincolnshire, England, a total of four Borger rotary lobe pumps are an integral part of the AD process that utilises maize, sugar beet and chicken litter as its feedstock.

The installations provide another example of the role rotary lobe pumps can play in the handling of organic feedstocks at anaerobic digestion facilities.

With applications spanning food waste composting, biogas production and anaerobic digestion, Borger’s range of pumps and macerators is designed to address the demanding requirements associated with the processing and transfer of organic materials.
