Greif’s Valérex drum is a Packaging Revolution

Listen to this article

Revolution Oil is a British company specialising in products for independent garages. At any time they may have around 2000 different products, ranging from engine oils to degreasers, traffic film removers and antifreeze. They have chosen the 20 litre version Greif”s Valérex drum, featuring a decorated stretch sleeve, as their primary product container.

Because of their geographically broad customer base, who may only buy a small number of products at a time, It is vital that Revolution”s packaging is robust, reliable and projects a strong brand image. Often, the packs may not be palletised for delivery and may be stored outdoors, so they need to stand up to the elements. Add to that a variety of dispensing techniques and the need for good ergonomics, and you have a real packaging challenge.

From a technical point of view, Valérex was a perfect solution. Valérex is made from tough HDPE, so it will not break, dent or rust, problems that had previously resulted in product returns for Revolution when their products were packed in tinplate drums. The large handle makes the Valérex container easy to tip and pour, and Revolution Oils also valued the internal thread to the cap of the container which allowed the threaded hoses of some styles of dispenser to be directly connected. A 20 litre capacity drum was selected to help to meet manual handling regulations.

Revolution needed a striking pack design that would dynamically and cost effectively communicate their brand. They chose a 20 litre Valérex drum featuring a white body and Revolution”s corporate colours of red and blue for the end caps with a high-quality screen printed stretch sleeve covering the entire body of the container. The white body emphasised the 3-colour print on the stretch sleeve. The end result is a striking pack that can be customised for each of Revolution”s many products simply by adding a label, and which provides continuous presence for Revolution”s brand. The whole of the container body is available to be decorated, so Revolution have been able to use the Valérex drum to promote their whole range of products and add important safety information.
