The Volkswagen Group have a target to cut their energy consumption by 25% per component by 2018 and Grundfos Pumps have been working with them to help to achieve this
The Braunschweig plant in Germany was the very first Volkswagen site and today it is still an intrinsic part of the business, producing axles, brake discs and shock absorbers for all the various marques within the family. This type of production demands significant amounts of energy, as besides the energy to run the lines, there is a huge demand for lubricant cooling.

With a pump system to support the operation of each line, in order determine the energy usage, Grundfos undertook a detailed Pump Audit. The results recommended the optimising of the pump system using a Grundfos MPC pump controller that would identify changes in pressure and adjust the pumps’ external frequency converters according to the actual demand. The outcome of this has seen energy savings of 40% meaning an ROI of 1-2 years and a very happy customer.
Volkswagen are well known for their ultra-efficient ‘Think Blue’ technology and it is good to know that this ethos is reflected all the way through their organisation. Grundfos are delighted to be playing an important role in their energy journey.
