HRS Heat Exchangers Ltd delivers heat recovery solutions to Waste Recycling Group and Continues their successful journey to reduce carbon footprint

Listen to this article

HRS Heat Exchangers Limited, a leading heat transfer specialist for the process industry, has supplied heat exchangers to the Waste Recycling Group (WRG) Eastcroft Energy from Waste Plant in Nottingham. WRG, a leading UK waste management and energy recovery company, is part of FCC the international environmental services, infrastructure and energy group.

HRS Heat Exchangers supplied WRG with two KH 225 273/12 4.0m Shell and Tube heat exchangers. The installation of heat exchangers ensured waste heat recovery in the High Pressure Hot Water (HPHW) for the EfW incinerator that feeds a turbine. The capability of HRS heat recovery systems to retrofit into existing systems encouraged WRG to replace existing units. HRS matched up to the existing site connections and designed to suit the space left by the failed parts.

The HRS K series heat exchanger is an all stainless steel shell and tube heat exchanger for industrial use and an ideal heat exchanger for steam to water applications such as CIP heating. The 4 metre long units were supplied with AEL headers that allow the customer to visually inspect the tube side of the heat exchanger, without having to remove site pipe work.

WRG is focused on generating energy from waste and had a unique set of requirements. HRS was able to provide them with components of a heat recovery solution to save energy and costs and accommodate their specific needs. WRG also needed units with a design pressure of 60bar, tested to 90bar. Longevity was the aim as the previous heat exchangers had problems with welds and tubes failing.  As a result, the heat exchangers were designed to Pressure Equipment Directive category 4 which required 10% x-ray inspection of the welds.

Commenting on the project Karl Starkey, General Manager of the Eastcroft EfW plant, said, “HRS satisfied our requirements to the fullest. The new heat exchangers have proved a successful replacement and have allowed the site to become more energy efficient”.

“The units supplied to WRG provide greater efficiency than normal smooth tube heat exchangers as their corrugated tubes allow for greater heat transfer rates. This efficiency maximised WRG’s energy recovery capabilities, enabled fuel efficiency and performance”, said Stephen Wooler, Technical Design Engineer, HRS Heat Exchangers. “HRS heat exchangers are custom designed and can adapt to meet the specific service and application requirements of our customers”.
