Reports from leading research and advisory firm, ARC, estimate that globally an astounding US$65 billion worth of installed automation systems have reached the end of their lifecycle. Unfortunately for thousands of businesses advancing this equipment will equal an expensive upgrade bill, closure of plants and processes and a loss in revenue. In the limited cases where a mitigation strategy exists, it often requires extensive and expensive redevelopment work, automation application redevelopment and distributive “rip and replace of existing equipment only to return to current levels of performance.
To avoid this scenario, ABB has established a six stage Evolution for Life programme. The programme endeavours to prevent any eleventh-hour problems and excessive costs of a failing automation system. The programme focuses on preserving the integrity of an existing installed base which results in a seamless implementation of supportable equipment that can ultimately eliminate the need for expensive interruptions to production throughout the lifecycle of an automation system.
