Call from the Caribbean for Landia mixers to solve rectangular tank mixing challenge

Listen to this article

Landia has secured a significant order to supply low-energy mixers to the Tamboril Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Dominican Republic, supporting a new government initiative to improve wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure.

The project forms part of wider investment aimed at enhancing municipal wastewater treatment capacity and operational efficiency. With growing demand for reliable and energy-efficient solutions, the Tamboril WWTP required robust mixing technology capable of delivering consistent performance under challenging tank geometries.

The installation features slow-speed Landia 9HP POP-I mixers operating at 180rpm. Fitted with stainless steel propellers, the mixers are specifically designed to create gentle and consistent flow patterns within rectangular aeration tanks measuring approximately 30m in length by 25m in width and 3.5m in depth. Rectangular tanks can present complex mixing challenges, particularly in achieving uniform flow distribution without excessive energy consumption or dead zones.

By using low-energy wastewater mixers, the plant benefits from efficient oxygen transfer and reliable solids suspension while keeping operational costs under control. The slow-speed design also helps to reduce wear and maintenance requirements, contributing to long-term reliability and lower whole-life costs.

Serving a population of around 38,000 people, the Tamboril WWTP treats municipal wastewater using tertiary treatment processes. The facility is designed to handle influent flow rates of 0.629 m3 per second and 0.085 m3 per second respectively, ensuring effective treatment even during variable loading conditions. Consistent mixing within the aeration tanks plays a critical role in maintaining treatment performance and regulatory compliance.

Landia’s involvement in the Tamboril project further strengthens its track record in supplying mixing solutions for wastewater treatment plants across the Caribbean and Central America. The company’s regional experience includes successful installations at a major food producer in Puerto Rico and at a paper mill in El Salvador, where reliable industrial mixers were required to support demanding process conditions.
